CCTV / Camera System

Marine CCTV differs from bridge navigation sensors in one basic way: it does not measure anything, it lets a human see somewhere they cannot stand -- the ISPS-restricted deck, the engine room during unmanned periods, or the blind zones ahead of a large bow.

What Makes CCTV Different from Other Bridge Equipment

Every other item under Navigation & Bridge Equipment processes a physical measurement -- depth, speed, heading, position -- into a number or a plot. CCTV instead relays a live image, and its value depends entirely on where the cameras are pointed and who is watching. On a merchant ship this typically covers three separate purposes at once: ISPS security surveillance of access points and restricted areas, operational monitoring of cargo decks, mooring stations and the engine room, and navigation assistance covering blind zones that the bridge cannot see directly, particularly forward of a large container ship's bow or around the stern during berthing.

Main Components

Camera Units

Fixed or pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras in marine-rated housings, IP66 or better, with heater elements on exposed units to prevent lens fogging and icing. Low-light or thermal-imaging cameras are common on engine room and open deck installations where lighting is poor or absent.

Cabling and Network

Modern systems run IP cameras over a dedicated ship network, often separate from the main IT/OT LAN for cybersecurity reasons, rather than analogue coax, allowing digital zoom, remote configuration and integration with the ship security alert system.

Recording and Storage

A network video recorder retains footage for a period set by company security procedure, commonly 30-90 days, with the ISPS-designated cameras recorded continuously and access to playback restricted and logged.

Monitor and Control Station

Bridge and, where fitted, cargo control room and engine control room monitors display live feeds; PTZ cameras are controlled from a joystick or software panel, usually restricted to authorised users.

Selection and Sizing

Camera count and placement follow the vessel's ship security plan (SSP) for ISPS coverage first, then operational needs. Key figures buyers check are resolution, low-light sensitivity in lux, and housing ingress protection rating for exposed deck locations.

ApplicationTypical Requirement
ISPS access pointsContinuous recording, tamper alarm, restricted access
Engine roomHigh-temperature rated housing, wide dynamic range for machinery lighting
Bow blind-zoneWide-angle or PTZ, bridge display integration
Mooring stationsPTZ with line-tension view, weatherproof housing

Regulations and Class

CCTV coverage of restricted areas and access points is driven by the ISPS Code and the ship's approved Ship Security Plan rather than a SOLAS carriage requirement in itself; class societies do not mandate CCTV as core navigation equipment, but where fitted it is checked against the SSP during ISSC verification. Some flag states and port authorities additionally expect bridge-visible coverage of blind sectors on vessels above a certain length, referenced in bridge visibility guidance rather than a dedicated CCTV regulation.

Typical Faults

FaultCauseConsequence
Blank or frozen feedNetwork switch or PoE injector failureBlind spot at exactly the location it was meant to cover
Fogged or salt-crusted lensFailed heater element or missed cleaning routineUnusable footage during an incident review
Gaps in recorded historyStorage overwritten before the retention period, or drive failureNo evidence available for an ISPS or cargo claim investigation
Unauthorised PTZ accessShared or default login credentials on the control stationSecurity breach, camera pointed away from a restricted area unnoticed

What to Look for in a Supplier

  • Network separation from IT/OT systems, or a documented cybersecurity approach if integrated.
  • Marine type approval for camera housings intended for exposed deck or engine room service.
  • Storage capacity and retention period matching the company's security procedure, not just the factory default.
  • Remote diagnostics support, since a failed camera at sea usually cannot be replaced until the next port.

Test the ISPS-designated cameras before every port state control or ISSC verification, not just once a year -- a camera that has quietly stopped recording for weeks is worse than no camera at all, because the crew believes it is covered.

Would you like to know more?

One request. A person reads it and replies by e-mail.

Tell us the manufacturer, the model and what you need — a part, a service call, a second opinion. A person reads every request and replies by e-mail.

No details at hand? A photo of the rating plate or the part is enough — simply attach it to the request.

Frequently asked

Three things people ask first.

Is CCTV / Camera System data free?

Yes. Every model page, every guide and every datasheet for this type is readable without an account. An account adds saved searches and requests, nothing is taken away.

My model is missing — what now?

Send us the nameplate. We identify it by hand, add it to the library, and if you need a part or a service, the request is already on our desk.

Can you source a CCTV / Camera System part?

Yes. Tell us the manufacturer, the model and what you need — a person reads every request and replies by e-mail.
