What sets a VDR apart from routine bridge logging
A Voyage Data Recorder is not simply a data logger; it is built specifically to survive the casualty it is meant to help explain. Its protective capsule must withstand fire, shock and deep-sea pressure, and it must keep recording automatically without depending on the crew to switch anything on. A Simplified VDR (S-VDR), fitted on many older or smaller vessels instead of a full VDR, records a reduced data set, typically without radar and ECDIS video, but must meet the same survivability requirements for its capsule. Neither type is an alarm or monitoring system; its only job is to preserve a record that can be recovered and played back after the fact.
Main components
Protective capsule (final recording medium)
A fixed or float-free capsule holding at least the last 12 hours of data, designed to survive 1100 degrees C for 60 minutes or 260 degrees C for 10 hours, a shock load, and submersion to 6000 metres, with an underwater locating beacon fitted.
Data acquisition unit
Collects and time-stamps inputs from bridge audio microphones, VHF communications, radar and ECDIS video, GPS, gyrocompass, speed log, echo sounder, AIS, rudder and engine order telegraph, and alarm status.
Bridge audio microphones
Positioned to capture conversation and instructions across the whole bridge, including wing stations on many installations, since bridge audio is often the most scrutinised data in an investigation.
Long-term storage unit
Some installations keep a separate, larger-capacity store of data beyond the mandatory 12 hours for operational or training playback, distinct from the protected capsule itself.
Selection and sizing
- Full VDR versus S-VDR, driven by vessel type, size and flag or class requirement rather than free choice in most cases.
- Number and placement of microphones needed to cover the actual bridge layout, including wings and chart table.
- Fixed versus float-free capsule, where float-free adds an automatic release mechanism that itself needs periodic testing.
- Interface compatibility with the vessel's existing radar, ECDIS and AIS, particularly on a retrofit to older equipment.
Regulations and class
SOLAS Chapter V, Regulation 20 sets the carriage requirement: passenger ships and most cargo ships of 3000 gross tonnage and above on international voyages must carry a VDR, with S-VDR permitted for many cargo ships built before the full VDR requirement took effect. IMO performance standards (resolution A.861(20) and successors, MSC.333(90) for current installations) define capsule survivability, data channels and recording duration. Annual performance testing by an approved service provider is mandatory, alongside class survey of the installation.

What to look for in a supplier
- An approved service provider network covering the vessel's actual trading pattern for the mandatory annual test.
- Clear documentation of which data channels are recorded, since S-VDR channel lists vary between manufacturers within the permitted minimum.
- Beacon and hydrostatic release battery life clearly stated, with replacement intervals built into the planned maintenance system.
Treat the annual VDR performance test result as a document worth reading in full, not filing; a technician's note about a marginal audio channel or a beacon nearing its battery life is exactly the kind of finding that only matters on the one day it is needed.
