Bridge Camera / CCTV
A bridge camera system extends the watchkeeper's eyes to blind spots the bridge windows cannot cover — the bow, the quarters, the engine room, the mooring stations — and, when linked to the VDR, provides a visual record that voice alarms and paper logs cannot.

What sets a bridge camera system apart from other bridge instruments
Unlike instruments that measure a single physical quantity (depth, speed, heading), a CCTV system is a distributed set of cameras, cabling and a central recorder that gives the officer of the watch and, after the fact, investigators, a direct view of areas the bridge windows cannot cover: the bow in restricted visibility, the stern and quarters during mooring, engine room and steering gear spaces, cargo deck on tankers and gas carriers, and enclosed lifeboat stations. It complements rather than replaces radar and AIS — a camera shows what is actually happening at a location, not a symbol.
Main components
Camera units
Fixed or pan-tilt-zoom units in weatherproof, often explosion-proof housings for hazardous areas such as tank decks on tankers and gas carriers. Low-light or thermal units are common for bow and mooring station cameras used at night.
Central recorder / matrix
A network video recorder stores footage on a rolling basis and switches feeds to bridge monitors. On ships fitted with a VDR, selected camera feeds are typically interfaced to the recorder so bridge activity and, where fitted, exterior views are captured alongside audio and radar data.
Bridge monitors and control
Multi-view monitors let the watchkeeper select or cycle through feeds; some installations add motion detection to flag activity on unmanned decks or mooring stations outside working hours.
Cabling and power
Runs in coaxial or, increasingly, IP/Ethernet cable through the same cable routes as other bridge systems, with power over Ethernet common for smaller camera units to reduce separate wiring.
Selection and sizing
Coverage is planned camera by camera against the actual blind spots of the specific bridge and hull form, not as a generic package. Points that decide the specification:
- Number and location of blind spots from the actual conning position
- Hazardous area classification at each proposed camera location (cargo deck, pump room)
- Low-light or thermal capability needed for night mooring and bow lookout duties
- Storage duration and whether feeds must be interfaced to the VDR
Regulations and class
SOLAS does not mandate bridge CCTV as a stand-alone requirement in the way it mandates radar or VDR, but where cameras are interfaced to a voyage data recorder, SOLAS Ch. V performance standards for the VDR govern how that footage must be captured and retained. Class societies issue notations for enhanced bridge monitoring, and flag or port state requirements for certain trades, such as enclosed space entry monitoring, can make specific coverage effectively mandatory.

What to look for in a supplier
- Camera housings rated for the actual hazardous area zone where they will be mounted
- Confirmed compatibility with the ship's existing or planned VDR interface
- Low-light and thermal options benchmarked in real deck conditions, not only datasheet lux figures
- Service network able to replace a failed camera without a full system re-cable
Walk the bridge wings at night before accepting the system — a camera that looks fine on the test bench often turns out to be aimed straight into a deck floodlight once it is dark.
