What Sets This Category Apart

Marine boilers split into two working principles that are often confused as one system. An oil-fired auxiliary boiler burns fuel directly to raise steam whenever the ship needs it, in port or at sea, independent of the main engine. An exhaust gas economiser instead recovers waste heat from the main engine's exhaust, producing steam for free while under way but nothing when the engine is stopped or running at low load. Most cargo ships run both into a shared steam drum or system, with the oil-fired unit picking up load in port and the economiser doing the bulk of the work at sea.

Main Components

Furnace and Burner (Oil-Fired Type)

The combustion chamber and its burner assembly, with automatic flame safeguard controls that shut fuel supply on flame failure, low water level or high pressure.

Gas-Side Heating Surface (Economiser Type)

Finned tube banks arranged in the exhaust uptake, sized to extract heat without an excessive back-pressure penalty on the main engine.

Steam Drum

Separates steam from water and provides the reserve volume that absorbs load swings without the water level swinging wildly.

Water Level Controls and Alarms

Independent high and low level alarms plus a low-low level shutdown, since a boiler run dry, even briefly, can warp or rupture tubes.

Safety Valves

Spring-loaded valves set to lift before design pressure is exceeded, tested and sealed at survey.

Selection and Sizing

  • Steam capacity matched to the largest simultaneous demand: fuel heating, accommodation heating, tank cleaning or cargo heating on tankers
  • Working pressure and superheat requirement, if any, of the connected consumers
  • Economiser gas-side pressure drop kept within the main engine maker's allowable back-pressure limit
  • Soot blowing arrangement for the economiser, since fouled fins lose effectiveness quickly on heavy fuel

Regulations and Class

Boilers are subject to periodic internal and external survey under class rules, with safety valve testing, water level alarm testing and, for older or higher-pressure units, thickness gauging of tubes and drums. SOLAS Ch. II-2 fire safety provisions apply to the boiler space itself, and MARPOL Annex VI governs the fuel burned in an oil-fired unit the same as it does the main engine.

Never trust a single water level indication - cross-check the gauge glass against the remote level alarm before every watch handover, because a boiler dried out by a stuck gauge glass fails suddenly and expensively.
