The Alfa Laval S.p.A. Aalborg AV is an Aalborg AV-family exhaust-gas waste-heat recovery boiler or economizer. It recovers thermal energy from engine, gas-turbine or other hot exhaust gas that would otherwise leave through the stack and uses that energy to heat water or generate steam in an approved configuration. On board ship the unit is installed in the exhaust-gas path and connected to the vessel's steam or hot-water circuit, with soot cleaning, drains and safety arrangements appropriate to the installation. Unlike a fired auxiliary boiler, heat input follows the available exhaust-gas energy and there is no independent burner controlling the primary heat source in normal waste-heat operation. Operational attention therefore centres on exhaust-side fouling, circulation, water level, gas bypass arrangements where fitted and protection against fires or overheating caused by deposits.
