Outboard Engine (Petrol/SI)

A petrol outboard is a self-contained propulsion unit — engine, gearbox, and propeller in one clamp-on housing — chosen for small craft and tenders specifically because it can be removed, serviced, and swapped without any shaft line work on the boat itself.

Knowledge

What to check on an Outboard Engine (Petrol/SI).

1,593 models from 30 manufacturers. Below: the manufacturers at a glance and the full model list.

What makes this type

A spark-ignition (SI) outboard combines engine, cooling, gearbox, steering pivot, and propeller into a single unit that clamps or bolts to the transom, with no shaft line, no stern tube, and no separate rudder needed on small craft since the whole lower unit steers. This is what separates it from an inboard or sterndrive: the entire propulsion package tilts up out of the water for beach launching, storage, or to clear debris, and can be unbolted and replaced in a few hours. On a ship's tenders, rescue boats, and workboats, that swap-out simplicity is usually the deciding factor over an inboard diesel, alongside lighter weight for a given power output. Petrol/SI units differ from diesel outboards mainly in fuel handling and the ignition system — a spark plug and timed ignition rather than compression ignition — which brings petrol's flash point and vapour-handling hazards onto the boat.

Outboard engine arrangement
Petrol outboard engine: the powerhead under the cowling drives a vertical driveshaft through the midsection to the gearcase and propeller, exhaust passes down through the midsection and out through the propeller hub, cooling water is drawn in at the gearcase and carried up to the powerhead, and the transom clamp bracket and tiller hold and steer the unit.

Main components

Powerhead

The engine itself, two-stroke or four-stroke, air- or (more commonly on modern units) water-cooled using raw seawater drawn through the lower unit.

Mid-section and exhaust

Routes exhaust down through the propeller hub on most designs, which quiets the exhaust note by discharging it underwater.

Lower unit / gearcase

Contains the gear shift (forward-neutral-reverse) and the right-angle drive to the propeller shaft; gear oil in this housing is the first place water intrusion shows up, usually from a damaged propeller shaft seal after a strike on debris or the bottom.

Steering and tilt/trim

Manual or hydraulic steering pivots the whole lower unit; power trim adjusts the propeller thrust angle for load and speed, and manual tilt lifts the unit clear of the water when not in use.

Selection / Sizing

Power is matched to hull weight (including full complement and equipment for a rescue boat) and the required speed for its role — SOLAS rescue boats have minimum speed requirements that directly set the horsepower needed. Shaft length must match transom height; too short exposes the propeller and cavitation plate, too long drags the lower unit and adds resistance. For rescue boats and MOB (man overboard) boats, cold-start reliability and the ability to run inverted briefly or self-right without stalling the engine are practical selection factors beyond raw power.

Regulations / Class

Where the outboard powers a SOLAS rescue boat or fast rescue boat, LSA Code and SOLAS III performance requirements (minimum speed, ability to manoeuvre, engine starting in cold conditions) apply to the boat-and-engine combination as tested, not the engine alone. EPA 40 CFR 1045 (or the equivalent IMO/flag emissions standard) governs exhaust emissions for the engine as manufactured; class does not typically survey the outboard itself in detail but does survey the rescue boat and its readiness, including a functional engine start, at each inspection.

Typical faults

  • Stale fuel / ethanol-blended petrol degradation — gum deposits in carburettors or injectors after long lay-up periods between drills, causing hard starting.
  • Water-pump impeller wear — reduced raw-water cooling flow, leading to overheating that is often not noticed until the engine has already suffered damage.
  • Propeller shaft seal damage from grounding or debris strike — allows water into the gearcase, contaminating the gear oil and corroding gears if not caught.
  • Corroded electrical connections — salt air affects ignition and starting circuits faster on outboards than on enclosed inboard engines.
  • Sacrificial anode depletion — accelerated galvanic corrosion of the lower unit once anodes are consumed and not replaced.

What to look for in a supplier

  • Documented compliance testing for the specific rescue-boat combination, if the outboard is going onto a SOLAS boat, not just a generic power rating.
  • Parts availability for the gearcase seals and water-pump impeller, the two highest-wear serviceable items.
  • Cold-start reliability data if the vessel trades in cold climates, since a rescue boat engine that will not start defeats the boat's purpose.
  • Corrosion protection package (anodes, coatings) suited to salt-water immersion and storage on davits exposed to spray.

Run rescue-boat outboards under load, not just a dockside start, at every drill — a warm start on the bench tells you nothing about whether the engine will push the boat clear of the ship's side.
