Central Cooler (Plate Type)

A plate-type central cooler is the single heat exchanger separating the aggressive raw seawater circuit from the closed fresh water system serving the main engine, gensets and auxiliaries, so its gaskets and plates are the one barrier standing between corrosive seawater and everything downstream.

What to check on a Central Cooler (Plate Type).

What defines this type

A plate heat exchanger stacks pressed metal plates in a frame so that seawater and fresh water flow in alternating channels, in counter-flow, separated only by the plate and its gasket. Compared with a shell-and-tube design, the plate arrangement gives a much higher heat transfer coefficient per unit of footprint, which is why it is the common choice for a central cooler. The central cooler concept means one unit does the work: raw seawater cools a closed fresh water circuit once, and that fresh water then goes on to cool the main engine jacket, generator engines, air coolers and lube oil coolers in series or parallel, instead of each of those systems having its own dedicated seawater-cooled exchanger.

Main components

  • Plate pack — pressed titanium or stainless steel plates, the corrugation pattern setting the turbulence and heat transfer performance.
  • Frame plate and moving pressure plate — fixed and movable end plates that clamp the pack together.
  • Gaskets — NBR or EPDM seals between plates, the component most exposed to chemical and thermal ageing.
  • Tie bolts — compress the plate pack to the tension the manufacturer specifies for the gaskets to seal.
  • Connections and support frame — seawater and fresh water inlet/outlet, and the carrying bars the pack slides on for opening.

Selection / sizing

The starting figure is total heat load to be rejected across all systems the central fresh water circuit serves, sized against a design seawater temperature that reflects the worst realistic case for the trading area, often around 32°C for tropical service. Plate material is normally titanium for seawater resistance; the number of plates and the gasket type are set by the required approach temperature and the pressure drop the pumps can supply on both sides. Vessels that cannot tolerate losing cooling fit two coolers in a duty/standby or split-load arrangement rather than relying on a single unit.

Regulations / Class

Class rules require reliable cooling capacity for essential machinery and periodic pressure testing of the cooler after it has been opened for cleaning or gasket replacement, following the survey requirements applicable to the vessel's class notation. Gasket material near machinery space boundaries is expected to meet the fire safety standard applicable to that location under the vessel's class and flag requirements.

Typical faults

  • Marine growth or scaling on the seawater side — reduces heat transfer, shows up as a slowly rising fresh water temperature that a routine inspection can miss until it affects engine performance.
  • Gasket degradation — allows internal leakage, letting seawater track into the fresh water circuit and introduce salt into the engine jacket water.
  • Plate erosion or pitting — eventually perforates, letting seawater leak directly into the fresh water side.
  • Incorrect tie bolt torque after reassembly — causes an external leak or uneven plate compression that shortens gasket life.

What to look for in a supplier

  • Plate material recommendation matched to the actual seawater quality and design temperature, not a generic default.
  • Gasket material compatible with the fresh water circuit's corrosion inhibitor chemistry.
  • A stated heat transfer guarantee that includes a realistic fouling factor, not a clean-plate figure.
  • Spare plates and gaskets available without a long lead time, and a pack that opens for cleaning without special tools.

A rising fresh water outlet temperature at unchanged seawater conditions is usually the first sign of fouling — check it before assuming the engine itself is the problem.
