A submerged cargo pump hangs its whole pump stack inside the cargo tank, driven from deck through a long vertical shaft, so there is no shaft seal in contact with the cargo — the feature that lets it handle volatile or corrosive liquids a deck-mounted pump cannot.

A deepwell pump has its motor on deck and only the pump bowls down in the tank, connected by a long vertical shaft the opposite arrangement from a submersible pump, and the reason a deepwell installation can be overhauled without opening the tank at all.

A stripping pump does the job the main cargo pumps cannot finish: pulling the last centimetres of liquid and trapped vapour out of a tank once suction breaks, which is why it is a positive-displacement design rather than a centrifugal one.

A pumproom-mounted centrifugal cargo pump keeps its driver -- steam turbine or electric motor -- outside the hazardous space, coupled to the impeller through a long vertical line shaft that crosses the pumproom bulkhead through a sealed gland.

Cargo tank heating exists to keep viscous or wax-bearing cargo pumpable, not to raise the whole tank to one temperature - most systems heat the coils and let convection do the rest, so a badly loaded tank can show good coil temperatures and still discharge slowly.

Two ways exist to fill a tanker's cargo tanks with an oxygen-starved atmosphere: burn fuel in a dedicated inert gas generator (IGG), or tap exhaust that the propulsion or auxiliary boilers already produce. The flue-gas arrangement is the older and still the dominant choice on crude carriers and large product tankers, because the gas source is free running whenever the boiler is lit.
