Side-Rolling Hatch Cover

Side-rolling covers move cargo hold panels sideways on wheeled bogies riding rails along the coaming, opening the hold in one motion without cranes, unlike pontoon covers that must be lifted clear individually.

What to check on a Side-Rolling Hatch Cover.

A side-rolling hatch cover consists of a row of steel panels, each running on wheels or bogies along a rail fixed to the hatch coaming, that roll sideways to stack clear of the hatch opening rather than being lifted vertically. This distinguishes it from pontoon covers, which are individual panels craned on and off, and from folding covers, which hinge and stack upward on hydraulic rams. What Sets a Side-Rolling Cover Apart

Side-rolling covers are common on bulk carriers and general cargo ships where fast, self-contained opening matters and where deck space to each side of the hatch is available for the stowed panels to park. Because the panels roll on their own wheels, opening and closing does not depend on shore cranes, which is the main reason the type is chosen over pontoons on vessels that load and discharge at ports with limited cargo-handling equipment.

Main Components

Cover panels

Steel-plated, stiffened panels sized to span the hold width in one or two rows per hatch, each carrying its share of the deck cargo and green-sea load when closed.

Wheels and rail track

Wheels are mounted on the underside of each panel and run on a rail welded along the coaming top or side; rail alignment and wheel condition directly determine how freely the panels move.

Cleats and compression system

Hydraulic or mechanical cleats pull each panel down onto a rubber gasket seated in the coaming to achieve a weathertight seal once the cover is closed; the compression must be even along the full length of the panel or the seal leaks at the low points.

Chain or wire haulage system

Panels are typically linked by chains or wire ropes to a hydraulic motor or winch so the full row moves together in a single-pull or double-pull arrangement, stacking at one or both ends of the hatch.

Selection and Sizing

Sizing follows the hold geometry rather than a standard catalogue size, so the figures that matter when comparing offers are:

  • Hatch opening dimensions and the available stowage length for stacked panels to each side
  • Design load: deck cargo, container stacking loads if containers are carried on the closed hatch, and green sea loading per class rules
  • Single-pull versus double-pull arrangement, which affects opening time and the machinery needed
  • Steel grade and coating specification for the panels and rail, given continuous exposure to green water

Regulations and Class

Hatch cover weathertightness and strength are governed by the applicable Load Line Convention requirements and IACS Unified Requirements on hatch cover strength and securing, which set minimum plate thickness, stiffener scantlings and the design sea loads the cover must withstand. Class surveys include periodic hatch cover weathertightness testing, commonly by hose test or ultrasonic gap gauging of the compression seal, at intervals set out in the vessel's class survey scheme. A cover that fails the weathertightness test is a recordable deficiency and, if the leakage risk affects cargo or stability, can hold up sailing until rectified.

Typical Faults

FaultCauseConsequence
Worn or misaligned wheelsRail corrosion, lack of lubrication, panel overloadPanels bind or derail during opening, delaying cargo operations
Perished compression rubberUV and salt exposure, age, cargo residue on the gasket seatWater ingress into the hold, cargo wetting damage claims
Uneven cleat compressionBent cleats, worn hydraulic seals, distorted panelLocalised leaks even where most of the seal tests tight
Chain or wire stretchCyclic loading, inadequate tensioning maintenancePanels fail to close fully square, seal gap opens at one end

What to Look for in a Supplier

  • Scantling calculations referenced to the vessel's class society and confirmed against the actual hold geometry
  • Compatibility of the new cover's rail and cleat spacing with the existing coaming if it is a replacement rather than a newbuilding fit
  • Coating specification suited to the trade, since a cover in a corrosive cargo trade needs a different system than one in dry bulk grain service
  • Availability of wheels, gaskets and cleat spares as separate line items, not only as a complete cover assembly

Check wheel and rail wear before every long ballast passage in open water — a cover that rolls stiffly in port can bind completely once the ship works in a seaway, and that is the wrong time to find out.

One request. A person answers within 24 hours on working days.

Tell us the manufacturer, the model and what you need — a part, a service call, a second opinion. Our desk asks the right suppliers from a network of over 114,000 companies and comes back with a quote or a sourcing plan, not a search page.

Frequently asked

Three things people ask first.

Is Side-Rolling Hatch Cover data free?

Yes. Every model page, every guide and every datasheet for this type is readable without an account. An account adds saved searches and requests, nothing is taken away.

My model is missing — what now?

Send us the nameplate. We identify it by hand, add it to the library, and if you need a part or a service, the request is already on our desk.

Can you source a Side-Rolling Hatch Cover part?

Yes. Tell us the manufacturer, the model and what you need — our desk asks the right suppliers from a network of over 114,000 companies and comes back with a quote or a sourcing plan.
