RoRo Door

medium 48 models total

A RoRo door closes an opening in the hull or superstructure that vehicles drive through, and unlike a ramp it is not meant to be driven over, so its design is built entirely around watertight or weathertight sealing and reliable operation under load from wind and sea.

What sets a RoRo door apart

Within RoRo equipment, ramps carry vehicle weight while they are open, but a RoRo door's only job is to seal an opening once vehicles have passed through it, closing off a bow, stern or side opening that would otherwise be exposed to the sea. Bow and stern doors close large openings that may sit at or below the freeboard deck, and their integrity is a direct line of defence against flooding, which is why door failures have historically been among the most serious causes of RoRo vessel loss.

RoRo door, closed position
Side elevation of a RoRo door closed into its hull opening, showing the coaming, the door panel, the top hinge, the hydraulic operating cylinder, the perimeter sealing gasket and the locking cleats at the bottom edge.

Main components

Door leaf

A single or split-leaf steel structure, hinged or sliding, sized to the vehicle deck opening and stiffened to resist sea pressure when closed.

Hoisting or hinging mechanism

Hydraulic cylinders or wire hoists that raise, lower or swing the leaf, typically with a mechanical locking system that takes the load once the door is closed so the hydraulics are not left holding the seal under sea pressure.

Sealing arrangement

A rubber gasket compressed by the closing and locking sequence, running the full perimeter of the opening, backed by cleats or wedges that pull the door tight against the gasket.

Position indication and interlocks

Sensors on the bridge and in the cargo control position showing door and lock status, interlocked where required with propulsion or departure checklists so the vessel cannot proceed with a door not fully closed and locked.

Selection and sizing

  • Opening size and location, driven by vehicle turning circles and the freeboard deck arrangement.
  • Design head of water the closed door and its securing must withstand at the relevant damage or intact draught.
  • Operating method, hydraulic ram, wire hoist or a combination, matched to available power and redundancy requirements.
  • Indicator and alarm integration with the vessel's existing bridge monitoring system.

Regulations and class

SOLAS Ch. II-1 sets specific structural strength, securing and indicator requirements for bow, stern and side doors on RoRo ships, following amendments introduced after major casualties involving door failures. Requirements cover positive indication of door and securing device status on the bridge, independent of the hydraulic system, plus periodic operational testing and class survey of the securing and locking arrangements. Watertight and weathertight door classifications carry different sealing and testing standards depending on the opening's position relative to the freeboard deck.

Typical faults

FaultConsequence
Gasket perished or compressed out of shapeLoss of watertight or weathertight integrity at the seal
Locking device not fully engaged before departureDoor held only by hydraulic pressure, at risk under sea load
Position sensor misaligned or faultyFalse closed indication on the bridge while the door is not secure
Hinge or hoist wire corrosion from salt exposureUneven closing, increased gasket wear, mechanism seizure

What to look for in a supplier

  • Type approval for the securing and indication system matching current SOLAS requirements, not a design predating the post-casualty amendments.
  • Independent, hard-wired indicator circuits separate from the hydraulic control system.
  • Demonstrated servicing support for gasket replacement and hydraulic component overhaul in the vessel's trading area.
  • Clear documentation of the design head of water the door and locks are certified to withstand.

Bridge indicator lights only report what the sensor sees, so a closed-and-locked signal is worth confirming visually at the door during the first voyages after any maintenance on the securing devices, not just trusted on the panel.

Check: Perform visual inspection for rust, pitting, scratches and unevenness on rod and cylinder body. Measure with caliper to check wear limits. Check chrome surface for gloss (gloss on one side only = bending). Check for leakage.
  • Area: Seal and compression rod integrity (rubber wear, water ingress)
Check: Check seal for wear, embrittlement and cracks. Check compression rods for scratches and corrosion. Perform N2 pressure test (maintain 7 PSI internally; annual inspection required). Check for water ingress in hinge area.
  • Area: Hinge wear, lubrication and ball bearing corrosion
Check: Inspect main and end hinges for wear, contamination and freedom of movement. Check spherical ball bearings for wear and corrosion. Perform lubrication per manufacturer specifications. Check for leakage and missing bearing pins.
  • Area: Hydraulic locking wedges and semi-automatic locking mechanisms (loss of function, wear)
Check: Test hydraulic wedges under pressure (movement, holding, leakage). Check lock positions and auto-cleats (lift/open function). Test manual hand pumps. Check all lock fasteners for wear and deformation.
  • Area: Wire ropes and supports (fatigue, fractures, wear)
Check: Perform visual inspection for wear patterns, contamination, corrosion, color loss. Check for dents, scratches, crushing, kink marks. Rotate and check for continuous fractures. Inspect regularly before and after operations. Mark replaced ropes.
  • Area: Weather tightness of ramp opening and bulkhead integrity
Check: Inspect rubber seal along entire bulkhead opening (wear, cracks, embrittlement). Check stainless steel compression rods for smooth surface (prevent water ingress). Detect leakage through pressure test or visual inspection (water stains). Inspect ruckling deformation of bulkhead frame.
