Stern Ramp
A stern ramp is hinged at the transom and loads straight in from the quay or linkspan, unlike an angled quarter ramp; where it also closes a hull opening below the freeboard deck it doubles as a watertight or weathertight closing appliance, not just a driving surface.

A RoRo door closes an opening in the hull or superstructure that vehicles drive through, and unlike a ramp it is not meant to be driven over, so its design is built entirely around watertight or weathertight sealing and reliable operation under load from wind and sea.

Hoistable Car Deck
A hoistable car deck is a movable intermediate deck within a single hold that raises or lowers on hydraulic lifts to trade cargo height for cargo density, letting the same hold carry two tiers of cars one voyage and a single tier of high-and-heavy trailers the next.

Side Ramp
A side ramp lets a ferry load and discharge vehicles through an opening in the shell plating rather than over the stern, which matters at berths where stern access is blocked by other traffic or where the ship needs to work cargo from both a stern ramp and a side door at once to cut port time.

Internal Ramp
An internal ramp connects two cargo decks inside the ship rather than the ship to the shore, and unlike a stern or side ramp it never needs watertight closure - its job is purely structural, moving vehicles between decks quickly enough not to become the bottleneck in a RoRo ship's turnaround.

Quarter Ramp
A quarter ramp is hinged at the ship's stern corner rather than on the centreline, letting vehicles load at an angle when berth layout or a fixed quay structure rules out a straight stern ramp; the angled geometry changes its loading, hinge and sea-fastening design compared with a centreline ramp.

What a RoRo Equipment engineer checks first.

A stern ramp is mounted across the transom and swings down to meet the quay, linkspan or another ship's ramp in a direct line with the vehicle deck. That straight-through geometry is the whole point: a quarter ramp is offset to one side because the berth or the ship's stern shape does not allow a straight approach, and a bow ramp or visor serves the same purpose at the opposite end of the ship, usually behind a separate weathertight bow door.
