What sets an axial fan apart
An axial fan moves air parallel to its own shaft, the propeller-like blades pushing a large volume straight through the housing rather than turning it through ninety degrees the way a centrifugal fan does. That gives an axial fan a compact footprint and high flow for its size, but a comparatively low ability to build static pressure against resistance. On board that makes it the right choice for engine room supply and exhaust, where the duct run is short and open, and for cargo hold ventilation, but a poor choice anywhere the air has to fight long ductwork, fine filters or several fire dampers in series.

Propeller / impeller
Fixed or adjustable-pitch blades set in a cylindrical casing; adjustable-pitch blades let the same fan be rebalanced for a different duty point without changing the motor.
Casing / guide vanes
