Auftriebskammer und Dach

Zwei unabhängige, getrennt aufblasbare Auftriebsschläuche tragen die Insel, selbst wenn einer durchlöchert ist; ein isolierter Doppelhautboden und ein Dach mit Reflexband und Regenwasserfang mindern die Auskühlung, sobald Überlebende an Bord sind.

Hydrostatische Auslöseeinheit (HRU)

Wo die Insel für das Freischwimmen gestaut ist, gibt die HRU sie in geringer Tiefe automatisch frei, wenn das Schiff sinkt, bevor die Insel von Hand ausgesetzt werden kann — ohne dass jemand handeln muss.

Fangleine und Aufblassystem

Eine CO2/N2-Gasflasche bläst die Insel auf, wenn die Fangleine bis zur vollen Länge gezogen wird; dieselbe Leine hält die Insel am Schiff vertäut — oder ist ausgelegt, bei einer gesetzten Last zu brechen — damit sie vor dem Einbooten nicht wegtreibt.

SOLAS-A-Überlebenspack

Zum Inhalt gehören typisch Rationen und Trinkwasser je Person, Tabletten gegen Seekrankheit, ein Erste-Hilfe-Satz, Handfackeln, Fallschirm-Leuchtraketen, schwimmfähige Rauchsignale, ein Radarreflektor, eine Taschenlampe, ein Reparatursatz für die Auftriebsschläuche, ein Ösfass, ein Treibanker und Angelzeug.

Auswahl und Auslegung

Die Auswahl bestimmen fast ganz zertifizierte Kapazität und Fahrtgebiet statt Konstruktionswahl:

  • Bemessene Kapazität in Personen, abgeglichen gegen die höchste Besatzungsstärke des Schiffs plus geforderte Marge
  • Containertyp: starrer GRP-Kanister für Davit- oder Freischwimm-Stauung, oder Tasche für kleinere Fahrzeuge, wo das Gewicht zählt
  • Aussetzmethode: Überbordwurf, davitgefiert oder freischwimmend in Kombination mit der HRU
  • Kaltwasser- oder Wärmeschutzoption für Schiffe in hohen Breiten oder Wintergewässern

Vorschriften und Klasse

Rettungsinseln regeln SOLAS Kapitel III und der LSA-Code (Code für Rettungsmittel), die Packinhalte, Auftrieb, Dach und Selbstaufrichtungsanforderungen setzen. Jede Insel muss an Land in einer zugelassenen Servicestation gewartet werden, in den Intervallen des Herstellerzertifikats, üblich jährlich — mit der HRU auf eigenem, getrenntem Ablaufzyklus ersetzt oder geprüft, typisch alle zwei Jahre. Klasse- und Flaggenbesichtigungen prüfen bei jeder periodischen Besichtigung das auf den Container gestempelte Fälligkeitsdatum, den Ablauf der hydrostatischen Auslösung und die korrekte Sicherungsanordnung; eine überfällige Insel ist ein Festhaltemangel der Hafenstaatkontrolle.
