MAPX Series
The MAPX series was the industry standard for marine fuel and lube oil purifiers for over three decades. Built by Alfa Laval from the mid-1970s onwards, it is based on the classic gravity disc principle for phase separation. Millions of operating hours on vessels of all classes worldwide. Since approximately 2005 progressively replaced by the ALCAP S series with automatic phase detection. Still widely used on older vessels (built before 2008), spare parts increasingly sourced from third-party suppliers.

Common failures & inspection points
Paring disc, top disc, mud ports check for dull spots/wash-out; erosion depth >0.2 mm (bowl/cap) or >0.5 mm (other) = replacement.
Leaks at cover/bolted joints/mud outlet; gasket rings (EPDM) change every 6000–8000 h, original parts only.
Check vibration/noise; bearings change in pairs every 12000–16000 h, lubricate correctly; do not increase throughput during vibration.
Belts every 3000 h (tension per manufacturer), cracks/wear; coupling check for axial play (>0.5 mm = fault), corrosion.
Monitor current consumption nominal/actual; clean bowl during shutdown; check pre-filtration + lubrication; limit sludge volume.

Service & Maintenance
Bowl overhaul every 4,000-6,000 hrs. Gravity disc selection critical for correct water seal. Gear oil change every 2,000 hrs. Complete overhaul at drydock intervals (5 years).
