ALCAP S-Series

Alfa Laval is the world's leading manufacturer of separators for marine applications with headquarters in Lund, Sweden. The ALCAP S series (Alfa Laval Clarifier and Purifier) is the successor to the classic MAPX/MOPX series and is characterized by automatic phase detection via capacitance measurement — no manual adjustment of gravity disc required. Standard equipment on newbuilds since the mid-2000s at all major shipyards (Hyundai, Samsung, DSME). The S series covers the entire range from coastal vessels to VLCC.

Common failures & inspection points

Schuessel-/Teller-Erosion

Paring disc, top disc, mud ports check for dull spots/wash-out; erosion depth >0.2 mm (bowl/cap) or >0.5 mm (other) = replacement.

Dichtungsringe

Leaks at cover/bolted joints/mud outlet; gasket rings (EPDM) change every 6000–8000 h, original parts only.

Kugellager

Check vibration/noise; bearings change in pairs every 12000–16000 h, lubricate correctly; do not increase throughput during vibration.

Riemen & Kupplung

Belts every 3000 h (tension per manufacturer), cracks/wear; coupling check for axial play (>0.5 mm = fault), corrosion.

Stromaufnahme/Verschmutzung

Monitor current consumption nominal/actual; clean bowl during shutdown; check pre-filtration + lubrication; limit sludge volume.

Type-general inspection and maintenance points for this equipment category — not model-specific.

Service & Maintenance

Bowl overhaul every 6,000-8,000 running hours. Disc stack cleaning every 2,000-4,000 hrs depending on fuel quality. Gear oil change every 3,000 hrs. Operating water system check weekly. Annual bearing inspection.
