Common issues

• Seat leakage from wear or debris trapped between the ball and seat
• Stem packing or gland leakage after repeated cycling
• Actuator misalignment, where fitted, causing incomplete open or close travel
• Seizure from infrequent operation and product residue buildup
• Corrosion or pitting on the ball or seat surfaces from aggressive cargo chemistry
• Spring-loaded seat ring degradation reducing sealing performance at low pressure differential

Inspection checklist

• Cycle the valve fully open and closed and confirm smooth operation without excessive torque
• Check the stem packing or gland for leakage and re-tighten or renew as needed
• Inspect body-to-bonnet and flange joints for leakage
• Verify the actuator, where fitted, travel matches the valve open and closed indication
• Check external corrosion on the body, stem and fasteners
• Confirm the valve position indicator matches the actual ball position
• Pressure or leak test per the vessel's cargo system testing schedule where required
• Inspect fire-safe or anti-static features, stem grounding and fire-safe seat, if fitted, for continued function

Safety

• Cargo manifold valves handle pressurised, often flammable or hazardous cargo - follow lockout and gas-free procedures before any seal or packing work
• Static discharge risk during cargo transfer - verify stem and body bonding and grounding continuity
• Residual product trapped in the valve body when opened for maintenance - drain and purge per the vessel's cargo handling procedures
• High-pressure line contents can cause injury if the valve is opened under pressure - confirm isolation and depressurisation first

Class survey

Class surveys of cargo manifold and cargo system valves typically check for external leakage and correct position indication, and, where the valve is part of the cargo system's overpressure or emergency shutdown arrangements, confirm function-test records are current.
