The Wärtsilä MSF Evaporator is a multi-stage flash freshwater generator used to produce distillate from seawater or another approved feed stream. The process heats the feed and then flashes part of it into vapour through a sequence of stages operating at progressively reduced pressure under vacuum. Vapour is condensed to form freshwater while concentrated brine is removed from the process. On ships the evaporator can use available thermal energy such as engine waste heat or steam, depending on the installed design, and is connected to seawater, distillate, vacuum and heating circuits. Compared with reverse osmosis, the MSF process is thermal and does not rely on high-pressure semi-permeable membranes for salt separation. The exact number of stages, production capacity, heating-medium conditions and distillate-quality limits are installation-specific; refer to the manufacturer documentation for the exact figure.

Trend vacuum, stage temperatures, feed/brine flows, distillate salinity and production. Inspect heat-transfer surfaces, demisters, ejectors, condensers, pumps and vacuum-tight joints for deposits, erosion, corrosion and leakage. Maintain chemical treatment and cleaning practices specified for the feedwater and materials. Test salinity protection and divert arrangements, and use manufacturer documentation for cleaning concentration, vacuum limits and acceptance criteria.
Carry pump seals and service parts, ejector/nozzle components where fitted, salinity-cell components, level and temperature sensors, valve kits, manway gaskets, demister elements where replaceable and approved descaling consumables. Tube repair materials should only be used under an approved maker procedure.
