The Wärtsilä HITE Evaporator is a horizontal inner-tube evaporator based on vacuum distillation for freshwater production or liquid concentration. Process or seawater is heated under reduced pressure so part of the liquid vaporizes at a lower temperature, and the vapour is condensed to form high-purity distillate. Its horizontal internal-tube arrangement is designed to use available thermal energy efficiently and can be integrated with variable waste-heat sources. On marine installations the unit forms part of the freshwater or water-treatment plant together with pumps, vacuum equipment, condensate handling and automatic controls. The process differs from reverse osmosis because separation is achieved by evaporation and condensation rather than passage through pressure-driven membranes.
