What sets a compactor apart from a shredder or incinerator

A garbage compactor does not destroy waste; it reduces its volume by hydraulic or mechanical compression, typically by a ratio of 4:1 to 8:1, so that dry, non-combustible or non-incinerable waste such as plastics, metal cans and glass can be stored on board for longer between port disposals. This is distinct from a shredder, which cuts waste into pieces for discharge, where permitted, or easier handling, and from an incinerator, which actually destroys combustible waste by burning it. Many vessels run all three in sequence: shred or sort, compact what cannot be burned, incinerate what can.

Main components

Compression chamber and ram

A hydraulically or mechanically driven ram presses waste against a fixed platen inside a steel chamber, sized to produce a compacted bale or bag of a fixed weight and dimension for easy handling and stacking.

Bagging or baling arrangement

Compacted waste is either pressed into a disposable bag held in a cassette, or, on larger units, tied off as a self-contained bale that does not need a separate bag at all.

Hydraulic power pack

A dedicated hydraulic pump and cylinder provide the compression force; smaller units instead use an electric screw or rack-and-pinion drive.

Regulations and class requirements

Garbage management on board is governed by MARPOL Annex V, which restricts what may be discharged at sea, essentially nothing plastic, and most other waste only beyond defined distances from land or not at all, and requires a Garbage Management Plan and Garbage Record Book on ships above the size threshold set in the annex. A compactor itself is not typically class-approved equipment, but its role in the ship's waste management plan is checked as part of that plan's implementation.

What to look for in a supplier
