Designation decoded
WinGD 5X35 – 5-Zylinder-Reihenmotor, X-Serie (neueste Generation), 35 = 350 mm Bohrung. Zweitakt-Kreuzkopf-Dieselmotor mit vollelektronischer Steuerung (nockenwellenlos). WinGD = Winterthur Gas & Diesel (ehemals Wärtsilä-Zweitaktsparte, seit 2015 im Besitz von CSSC). 350 mm Bohrung, 1550 mm Hub, 5 Zylinder.
Background
The WinGD X35 belongs to the X-Series, the latest generation of fully electronically controlled two-stroke crosshead engines from WinGD. The X-Series is the successor to the Sulzer RT-flex series (which in turn was the successor to the RTA). The concept is fully camshaft-less: fuel injection is via an electronically controlled common-rail high-pressure system (W-FIS = WinGD Fuel Injection System), exhaust valve control via hydraulic actuators (W-EVC = WinGD Exhaust Valve Control). Overall engine control runs through the UNIC system (Unified Controls). FlexCam enables flexible electronic cam profiles for different operating modes. Delta Tuning optimizes the engine for slow-steaming operation. The X35 is the smallest engine in the X-Series, designed for small merchant vessels and feeder container ships. The 5-cylinder configuration requires particular attention to torsional vibrations. iCER (intelligent Control by Exhaust Recycling) can be retrofitted for IMO Tier III compliance.

Inspector checklist
Logbook reference values
| Parameter | Expected | Deviation means |
|---|---|---|
| Zünddrücke (Pmax) aller 5 Zylinder | Pmax-Abweichung ≤ ±2 bar zwischen den Zylindern (elektronische Steuerung ermöglicht engere Toleranzen) | With electronic control, deviations >2 bar indicate injector malfunction, W-EVC problems or sensor errors |
| Exhaust gas temperatures per cylinder | 340–420 °C at rated load | Asymmetries indicate injector degradation, exhaust valve leakage or errors in electronic timing |
| Common-Rail-Druck (W-FIS) | 800–1000 bar (lastabhängig, systemspezifisch) | Pressure drop indicates injector leakage, high-pressure pump wear or pressure control valve malfunction |
| Auslassventil-Hydraulikdruck (W-EVC) | Gemäss WinGD-Spezifikation, typ. 200–300 bar | Deviations can indicate hydraulic leaks, faulty actuators or control valve errors |
| Spülluftdruck | 1.5–3.0 bar abs. (lastabhängig) | Low pressure indicates turbocharger fouling or charge air cooler problems |
| Zylinderöl-Verbrauch (Pulse Lubrication) | 0.5–1.0 g/kWh (lastabhängig optimiert) | Increased consumption combined with poor running behavior indicates system malfunction or incorrect oil quality |
Common Failure Modes
Expert tips
- 💡 The fully electronic control of the X35 enables very tight tolerances (Pmax ±2 bar) – deviations that would be acceptable on conventional engines are already a warning signal for component problems here
- 💡 On 5-cylinder engines verify the Barred Speed Range (locked speed range) in the wheelhouse and at the control stand – rapid passage through must be ensured
- 💡 UNIC fault memory not only to check for active faults but also for historical entries – recurring temporary faults can indicate creeping degradation

Classification & regulatory
IMO Tier II compliance standard. Tier III possible via iCER (intelligent Control by Exhaust Recycling) or SCR retrofit. Check NOx Technical Dossier and EIAPP Certificate. When operating with Delta Tuning: class approval for deviating engine parameters required. Verify UNIC software version against approved status – unauthorized software updates can compromise NOx compliance.

Common failures & inspection points
Visual inspection of liner for scratches, micro-welding and discoloration; check local surface roughness; hone liner or replace if necessary
Use thickness gauge (e.g. Fischer Dualscope MP0); compare with reference values from OM; inspect piston crown for thermal discoloration, cracks and deposits
Check fuel pressure during operation (reference value at R1); monitor fuel return for leaks; observe inspection lines at injectors for leaks
Perform continuous exhaust temperature monitoring per cylinder; initiate cylinder head inspections at temperature differences >30°C; check gas concentration in piston
Monitor servo oil pressure and flow; visually inspect all fuel lines and valve connections and under pressure; monitor sight glasses
