Smit Inert Gas System (Flue Gas Type)
The flue gas inert gas system uses the ship's boiler exhaust as the inert gas source — no separate generator required. The most common solution on VLCCs and large crude tankers, since the boiler is running anyway. Smit Gas (Rotterdam, acquired by Alfa Laval) was a pioneer of this technology.

Confirm non-return valves at deck seal outlet prevent backflow; verify pressure differential across deck seal maintained; listen for flow disturbance; schedule valve seat/seal inspection per Condition Audit; test with pressure gauge if vessel equipped
