Common failures & inspection points

Locking mechanism failure / stiff rotation

Manual twistlocks: manually rotate head through full 90° range, verify positive lock without slipping. Automatic twistlocks (C8A, Hippo): verify lock engages on crane lift and releases smoothly on lowering. Document any binding or delayed engagement.

Visible wear, plastic deformation, hairline cracks

Visual inspection: examine head and shank for cracks (reject any visible deformation), bent levers, missing retaining pins, cam surface pitting. Dimensional check: use go/no-go gauges on cam width, body diameter, lug protrusion; reject if drift >0.3 mm. 3D scanning for close-tolerance FAT systems.

Rust, salt deposits, corrosion on all surfaces

Check for white rust, galvanic corrosion (zinc loss), crevice corrosion at joints. Clean all parts from dirt, rust, salt deposits including bolts/nuts. Inspect galvanized coating for pitting. Measure coating thickness if severe corrosion suspected. Turnbuckles must not be corroded or too tight.

Corner casting fit & positive locking safeguard

Ensure bottom container corner castings are clean and free of deformation (damaged castings prevent proper lock seating). For C8A with 'positive locking' feature: verify lock can be manually locked below lashing bar level to limit peak forces on lashing bars and turnbuckles, preventing overload damage.

Valid certification & compliance documentation

Verify each twistlock, lashing rod, turnbuckle, and plate has current valid certification (DNV, BV, KR, ABS, or LR approval). Confirm equipment meets ISO 1496-1, ISO 3874, ISO 17040, and SOLAS VI/5 requirements. Reject any uncertified or expired equipment. Maintain inspection records per IACS UR C7.

Lubrication & maintenance deficiencies

Automatic units (Hippo, C8A): verify maintenance-free design requires no greasing. Manual/semi-automatic: check all moving parts are lubricated, springs function correctly, wire-operated drop-lock mechanisms (Hippo) operate smoothly. Document any seizing or stiffness; apply appropriate lubricant if needed.
