An autopilot holds a ship on a commanded heading, or on a track derived from waypoints, by comparing the vessel's actual heading, taken from the gyrocompass or a heading sensor, against the set course and driving the steering gear to correct any deviation, without a helmsman constantly at the wheel. Track control systems extend this by taking waypoints from the ECDIS or a route planning system and steering the vessel along the planned route rather than a single fixed heading, correcting for cross-track error as well as heading error.
