Fire Retardant Coating

medium 143 / 143 models (Inspector)

A fire retardant coating protects structural steel's load-bearing capacity in a fire, not the steel from corrosion; an intumescent system that has done its corrosion job perfectly can still fail its actual purpose if the fire-rated topcoat is damaged or overpainted incorrectly.

Read more — Fire Retardant Coating explained

What sets fire retardant coating apart

Most coating systems on a ship exist to keep steel from rusting. A fire retardant, or intumescent, coating has a different job: keeping structural steel below the temperature at which it loses load-bearing strength for a defined period during a fire, buying time for evacuation and firefighting. Under heat, the intumescent layer swells into a thick, insulating char that slows heat transfer into the steel beneath it. This is passive fire protection, distinct from active systems like sprinklers, and it is rated in minutes of protection, not in years of service life the way anticorrosive coatings are.

Fire retardant (intumescent) coating action
A structural steel beam with a thin intumescent coating before a fire, compared with the same beam once heat has made the coating expand into a thick insulating char layer that protects the steel.

Main components

Primer

An anticorrosive base coat compatible with the intumescent layer above it; incompatible primer-topcoat pairing is one of the most common causes of adhesion failure.

Intumescent layer

The reactive coating itself, typically epoxy or water-based, applied at a specific dry film thickness that is calculated, not estimated, for the required fire rating.

Topcoat / seal coat

A protective finish over the intumescent layer to guard it against mechanical damage and weathering, since a scraped or eroded intumescent film cannot swell evenly when it is needed.

Selection criteria

  • Required fire rating in minutes (commonly A-60, A-30 or H-class equivalents), which drives the dry film thickness specification directly.
  • Substrate profile the coating is rated for -- beams, columns and hollow sections each have published thickness charts, and a coating tested on one profile is not automatically valid on another.
  • Compatibility with the existing corrosion protection system if the intumescent is being applied to previously coated steel.

Regulations and class

SOLAS Chapter II-2 sets the fire integrity requirements for structural divisions and bulkheads that intumescent coatings are used to satisfy, and the coating system must carry fire test approval to the relevant standard for the specific steel profile and rating claimed. Class societies check that the applied dry film thickness matches the approved fire test certificate before accepting the installation, and any later overpainting must be verified against the same approval or it can void the fire rating.

Typical faults

  • Overpainting with an incompatible topcoat during routine maintenance, which can insulate the intumescent layer and prevent it from reacting correctly in a fire.
  • Dry film thickness below the certified minimum, invisible without a coating thickness gauge and common where application was rushed.
  • Mechanical damage from fitting-out work after the fire coating was applied, leaving bare or thin patches on beams later hidden by ceiling panels.
  • Cracking or loss of adhesion from substrate movement, more likely where surface preparation or primer selection was inadequate for the intumescent above it.

What to look for in a supplier

  • Fire test certification covering the exact steel profile, thickness and orientation used on the vessel, not a generic rating.
  • Compatibility guidance for maintenance overcoating so future repainting does not compromise the certified system.
  • Application records including dry film thickness measurements at handover, since these are what class and flag state will ask for later.

Never let routine maintenance painting touch a certified fire coating without checking the approved system first -- a well-meaning coat of the wrong topcoat can quietly erase a fire rating that took a full test programme to establish.

🎯 Application Area
Vessel Types: Bulk CarrierOil TankerContainer ShipPassenger FerryOffshore Platform
Technology: intumescent epoxy fire‑retardant coating
Application: Hull, ballast tank, cargo tank, deck, superstructure, pipework and fire-protection coating systems.
Selection Guide: Choose if you need a proven A‑60 fire‑protective coating for steel bulkheads, decks or engine‑room structures and have access to certified applicators. Avoid if vessel weight budget is tight, vibration control cannot be guaranteed, or a thin‑film solution is required.
✔ Strengths
  • • A‑60 fire rating meets IMO FSS requirements for structural steel protection
  • • Intumescent action creates a protective char layer, preserving load‑bearing capacity during fire
  • • Excellent corrosion resistance on marine steel substrates
  • • Long service life when applied at the specified 2800 µm dry film thickness
⚠ Weaknesses
  • • Requires certified applicators and strict surface preparation; installation time is long
  • • Very thick coating adds significant weight (≈2.8 mm) to structures
  • • Potential for cracking in high‑vibration zones if substrate movement is not controlled
  • • Critical over‑coating of windows and penetrations – mistakes can compromise fire performance
Common Failures & Inspection Points
  • Poor surface preparation causes loss of adhesion, blistering or early coating breakdown
  • Incorrect film build or application conditions cause runs, pinholes, incomplete cure or premature wear
  • Mechanical damage exposes the substrate and leads to localized corrosion
  • Chemical, cargo or immersion incompatibility causes softening, swelling, discoloration or delamination
  • Incorrect mixing, induction or overcoating practice causes poor cure or intercoat adhesion
Service: Inspect coating continuity, adhesion, cracking, blistering, rusting and mechanical damage. Review surface preparation and application records where available and identify whether failures are local or systemic. Repair only with compatible products and approved preparation. Refer to the coating manufacturer's documentation for the exact figure for film thickness, mixing ratio, cure time and environmental limits.
Spare Parts: Keep compatible touch-up coating, approved thinner or cleaner, repair primers and application consumables in accordance with the vessel coating maintenance plan.

🎯 Application Area
Vessel Types: Bulk CarrierTankerContainer ShipPassenger FerryOffshore Platform
Technology: water-based intumescent coating
Application: Hull, ballast tank, cargo tank, deck, superstructure, pipework and fire-protection coating systems.
Selection Guide: Choose if you need a water‑based, low‑VOC coating that delivers B‑15 fire protection on steel and can accommodate thick film builds. Avoid if the installation environment cannot guarantee controlled humidity or adequate ventilation, or where high impact resistance is a primary requirement.
✔ Strengths
  • • Provides a certified B‑15 fire protection level at 1200 µm dry film thickness
  • • Low VOC formulation suitable for enclosed ship spaces
  • • Can be applied directly to existing steel without extensive surface preparation
  • • Good adhesion in marine atmospheres when proper curing ventilation is provided
⚠ Weaknesses
  • • Highly moisture‑sensitive during the cure phase; requires controlled humidity
  • • Relatively low impact resistance compared with epoxy fire coats
  • • Film thickness can vary if application technique is not tightly controlled
  • • Longer drying/curing time and need for forced ventilation in confined areas
Strengths
  • Provides a certified B‑15 fire protection level at 1200 µm dry film thickness
  • Low VOC formulation suitable for enclosed ship spaces
  • Can be applied directly to existing steel without extensive surface preparation
  • Good adhesion in marine atmospheres when proper curing ventilation is provided
Weaknesses
  • Highly moisture‑sensitive during the cure phase; requires controlled humidity
  • Relatively low impact resistance compared with epoxy fire coats
  • Film thickness can vary if application technique is not tightly controlled
  • Longer drying/curing time and need for forced ventilation in confined areas

Application data not yet recorded.
Common Failures & Inspection Points
  • Area: Dry Film Thickness (DFT) does not meet PSPC 90/10 requirement
Check: Perform DFT measurement with calibrated wet film thickness gauge (ASTM D7091): 90% of all measurements ≥ nominal DFT; maximum 10% may be between 0.9×NDFT and NDFT. Minimum 3 measurements per square meter required. Measurement only after minimum 1 week drying time.
  • Area: Haftung des Beschichtungssystems zu Substrat unzureichend (Abloesung)
Check: Perform pull-off adhesion test (ASTM D4541) with portable adhesion tester: glue dolly to dry layer (≥1 week cure), increase perpendicular tensile force at constant rate until failure. Determine reading in MPa/PSI. Classify failure mode (adhesion failure at substrate, layer-to-layer failure or substrate failure). Minimum 5 test points per application area.
  • Area: Surface profile (anchor pattern) insufficient for adhesion after blast cleaning
Check: Measure surface profile per ASTM D4417 (Method B: depth micrometer, Method C: replica tape) BEFORE application. Determine Mean Maximum Profile (h_max) by averaging at least 20 peak-to-valley measurements. Required profile typically 50–75 µm for epoxy systems. If too shallow (<50 µm): blast clean again; if too deep (>75 µm): not acceptable.
  • Area: Fehlstellen (Pinholes/Holidays) in der Beschichtung — Korrosionsnukleation
Check: Deploy holiday/pinhole detector: low-voltage wet brush method (≤500 µm thickness) or high-voltage spark tester (>250 µm). Move electrode surface step-by-step over all surfaces. Alarm/needle indication shows defect. Mark and document. Alternatively: UV-pigment method for large-area tank testing in darkness.
  • Area: Application conditions (temperature/humidity/dew point) violate PSPC requirements — adhesion and cure failures
Check: During application and cure continuously document: steel temperature (surface temperature with infrared pyrometer), relative humidity (hygrometer), dew point. Ensure steel temperature is at least 3°C above dew point (condensation risk). Air temperature between 2–43°C (Seaguard 5000 HS: 35–110°F). Document in inspection record with date/time.
  • Area: Visuelle Maengel: Glanzgrad, Farbkontinuitaet, Kratzer, Blasen, Schalebildung, Kratzer
Check: Inspect visually against reference standard per ASTM D4141 Method C (gloss/color). Scan surfaces for weak points: scratches, blisters (pores), shell formation, scratches, color spots. Measure defect area with calipers and document photographically. Some surface defects (small scratches <5 mm²) are acceptable per PSPC tolerances; blisters or shell formation = rework required.

Check: Perform DFT measurement with calibrated wet film thickness gauge (ASTM D7091): 90% of all measurements ≥ nominal DFT; maximum 10% may be between 0.9×NDFT and NDFT. Minimum 3 measurements per square meter required. Measurement only after minimum 1 week drying time.
  • Area: Haftung des Beschichtungssystems zu Substrat unzureichend (Abloesung)
Check: Perform pull-off adhesion test (ASTM D4541) with portable adhesion tester: glue dolly to dry layer (≥1 week cure), increase perpendicular tensile force at constant rate until failure. Determine reading in MPa/PSI. Classify failure mode (adhesion failure at substrate, layer-to-layer failure or substrate failure). Minimum 5 test points per application area.
  • Area: Surface profile (anchor pattern) insufficient for adhesion after blast cleaning
Check: Measure surface profile per ASTM D4417 (Method B: depth micrometer, Method C: replica tape) BEFORE application. Determine Mean Maximum Profile (h_max) by averaging at least 20 peak-to-valley measurements. Required profile typically 50–75 µm for epoxy systems. If too shallow (<50 µm): blast clean again; if too deep (>75 µm): not acceptable.
  • Area: Fehlstellen (Pinholes/Holidays) in der Beschichtung — Korrosionsnukleation
Check: Deploy holiday/pinhole detector: low-voltage wet brush method (≤500 µm thickness) or high-voltage spark tester (>250 µm). Move electrode surface step-by-step over all surfaces. Alarm/needle indication shows defect. Mark and document. Alternatively: UV-pigment method for large-area tank testing in darkness.
  • Area: Application conditions (temperature/humidity/dew point) violate PSPC requirements — adhesion and cure failures
Check: During application and cure continuously document: steel temperature (surface temperature with infrared pyrometer), relative humidity (hygrometer), dew point. Ensure steel temperature is at least 3°C above dew point (condensation risk). Air temperature between 2–43°C (Seaguard 5000 HS: 35–110°F). Document in inspection record with date/time.
  • Area: Visuelle Maengel: Glanzgrad, Farbkontinuitaet, Kratzer, Blasen, Schalebildung, Kratzer
Check: Inspect visually against reference standard per ASTM D4141 Method C (gloss/color). Scan surfaces for weak points: scratches, blisters (pores), shell formation, scratches, color spots. Measure defect area with calipers and document photographically. Some surface defects (small scratches <5 mm²) are acceptable per PSPC tolerances; blisters or shell formation = rework required.

Application: Used on hulls, ballast tanks, cargo tanks, decks, superstructures, machinery spaces, and fire-protected areas on all vessel types.
Common Failures & Inspection Points
  • Poor surface preparation leaves rust, salts, oil, or dust beneath the coating and causes early blistering, delamination, or underfilm corrosion
  • Mechanical damage from impact, abrasion, cargo, or maintenance exposes the substrate and produces localized corrosion
  • Incorrect application conditions or film build cause pinholes, runs, cracking, incomplete cure, or weak adhesion
  • Chemical, UV, immersion, or temperature exposure beyond the coating capability causes softening, chalking, discoloration, or erosion
  • Ageing and repeated maintenance create incompatible layers or weak interfaces that peel during inspection or cleaning
Service: Inspect coating continuity, adhesion condition, rusting, blistering, cracking, mechanical damage, weld and edge coverage, and areas exposed to standing water or cargo. Surface preparation, environmental limits, dry-film thickness, curing, and compatibility must follow the approved coating specification and manufacturer documentation.
