Common issues
- Impeller clogs with debris typical of bilge/drainage duty, reducing flow
- Mechanical seal wears and allows water into the motor housing
- Power cable or plug is damaged from repeated dragging across deck or through hatches
- Float switch, where fitted, sticks, causing the pump to run dry or fail to start
- Strainer/inlet screen blocks with debris, causing loss of prime or cavitation
- Pump overheats and trips if run dry for an extended period
Inspection checklist
- Visually inspect the power cable and plug for cuts, abrasion or water ingress before each deployment
- Perform an insulation resistance test on the motor before use, especially after storage
- Check the mechanical seal oil chamber for water contamination
- Inspect the impeller and wear plate for damage or wear
- Clean and inspect the strainer/inlet screen
- Test float switch operation, start/stop levels, if fitted
- Check the lifting handle and discharge hose coupling for security
