What makes this type
SOLAS life jackets are built to one job: keep a person's face out of the water and their body face-up even if they are unconscious or injured, which is why they differ fundamentally from the buoyancy aids used in recreational boating. The standard splits into two families, foam and inflatable. Foam jackets rely on fixed buoyant material, are always ready with no maintenance beyond visual inspection, and are bulkier to store and wear.
