What makes this type

SOLAS life jackets are built to one job: keep a person's face out of the water and their body face-up even if they are unconscious or injured, which is why they differ fundamentally from the buoyancy aids used in recreational boating. The standard splits into two families, foam and inflatable. Foam jackets rely on fixed buoyant material, are always ready with no maintenance beyond visual inspection, and are bulkier to store and wear. Inflatable jackets pack flat, are far more comfortable for crew wearing them for long working periods, and rely on a gas cylinder and firing mechanism that has to be armed, inspected and serviced correctly or the jacket will not inflate when needed.

Main components

Buoyancy material or bladder

Closed-cell foam panels in the fixed type, or one or two inflatable chambers in the inflatable type, sized to deliver a minimum buoyancy figure set by SOLAS testing, generally around 150 Newtons for adult jackets meeting the full standard.

Inflation mechanism

A CO2 cylinder connected to an automatic hydrostatic or water-soluble firing head, backed up by a manual pull toggle and an oral inflation tube for topping up buoyancy once in the water.

Retro-reflective tape and whistle

Reflective patches positioned for visibility from a search light or aircraft, plus a whistle and, on many models, a light that activates automatically on immersion.

Crotch strap and closures

A crotch strap is mandatory on SOLAS jackets specifically to stop the jacket riding up over the head in the water, a failure mode that fixed jackets without this strap are prone to.

Selection and sizing

Jackets are supplied in adult and child sizes, with buoyancy figures differing by body weight range rather than a single universal rating. Crew jackets used for working on deck or in survival craft drills are usually inflatable for comfort during long wear, while passenger vessels commonly stock foam jackets for guests because they need zero maintenance and no training to don correctly under stress.

Regulations and class

• SOLAS Chapter III and the LSA Code set the buoyancy, righting and donning-time performance requirements for life jackets.
• Every person on board must have a life jacket, plus a percentage of spares sized for children where passengers are carried, and jackets must be stowed for rapid access, not locked away.
• Inflatable jackets require annual servicing at an approved service station, covering cylinder weight check, firing head replacement per manufacturer schedule, and a full inflation test of the bladder.
• Jackets carry a manufacture date and a service due date, both checked at survey; an out-of-date inflatable jacket is treated as a deficiency even if it looks intact.

Typical faults

• Hydrostatic firing head past its service life fails to trigger automatically, leaving the jacket relying only on the manual pull that an unconscious person cannot use.
• CO2 cylinder corrosion or under-weight goes unnoticed between services, resulting in partial or no inflation.
• UV degradation of the outer fabric on jackets stored in exposed deck lockers weakens seams years before the service label suggests a problem.
• Missing or perished crotch strap lets the jacket ride up in the water, defeating the face-up design entirely.
• Reflective tape delaminating or fading reduces visibility to search and rescue at exactly the time it matters most.

What to look for in a supplier

• Full SOLAS/LSA Code type approval documentation and wheelmark or flag-recognised certification for the specific model.
• An authorised service network for inflatable models covering the ship's trading area, not just the port of delivery.
• Consistent sizing and buoyancy documentation across a bulk order, since mixed batches complicate crew training and lifeboat drills.
• Spare firing heads and cylinders stocked to match the exact jacket model on board.

Check the service due date on every inflatable jacket during safety rounds, not just at the annual survey; a jacket carried past its due date has effectively become a foam jacket's worth of comfort with none of its reliability.
