What distinguishes a hydrophore from a simple pressure pump
A hydrophore, or pressure/hydrophore set, is not just a pump - it is a pump paired with a pressure vessel that stores a cushion of compressed air (or, in bladder-type designs, air separated from the water by a rubber diaphragm) so that small draw-offs at taps are supplied from the tank's stored pressure without the pump starting every time. The pump only starts when tank pressure falls to a set low point and stops again at a set high point, giving cycling that protects the pump from constant short starts and gives smoother pressure at the tap than a pump running directly against demand.
Main components
Pressure vessel
Air-over-water tanks need periodic air recharging as the air cushion slowly absorbs into the water over time; bladder-type tanks keep air and water permanently separated and need no recharging but the bladder itself can fail.
Pump set
Usually duty/standby centrifugal pumps so one unit can be serviced without losing water pressure, controlled by pressure switches or a variable speed drive.
Pressure switches / control panel
Set the cut-in and cut-out pressure points, and on more modern sets provide alternation between duty and standby pump and alarm on low pressure or pump fault.
Non-return and isolating valves
Prevent backflow into the pump when it is stopped and allow individual pumps or the tank itself to be isolated for maintenance without draining the whole system.
Selection and sizing
- Tank volume matched to expected peak demand and acceptable cycling frequency - too small a tank causes the pump to short-cycle and wear out early, too large adds weight and space for no operational benefit.
- Pump duty point (flow and head) matched to the highest fixture in the distribution system plus the pressure needed at the tap, not just the average demand.
- Duty/standby arrangement sized so either pump alone can meet reasonable demand, since running both together as normal practice defeats the redundancy.
- Materials in contact with potable water suited to drinking water service, not general service fittings.
Regulations and class
Potable water systems fall under the classification society's rules for domestic systems and under flag state or port state health requirements for drinking water quality, which bear on materials and on cross-connection prevention rather than on the hydrophore mechanism itself. Pressure vessels in the set are subject to the same pressure equipment testing requirements as other vessels of similar design pressure, including periodic inspection where the vessel construction and class rules require it.

What to look for in a supplier
- Tank type (air-over-water versus bladder) matched to the maintenance regime the crew can actually sustain.
- Pump curve data matched to the vessel's actual distribution system head loss, not a generic sizing chart.
- Materials certified suitable for potable water contact.
- Control panel compatible with existing alarm and monitoring systems if the set is a replacement rather than a new installation.
Count pump starts per hour, not just tank pressure, when troubleshooting a hydrophore set - a healthy-looking pressure gauge can still sit on top of a waterlogged tank that is cycling the pump to an early death.
