A marine tumble dryer moves several hundred kilograms of wet linen a day through a steam- or electrically heated drum, and its main engineering risk is not water but the lint it sheds into a duct that runs straight to open deck.

What sets a marine tumble dryer apart from the shore version

A domestic dryer vents warm moist air a few metres to an outside wall. A marine dryer usually sits several decks below the weather deck, so the exhaust has to travel through a long, rising duct against the ship's roll and pitch, past fire zone boundaries, and out through a weathertight cowl. That duct run, not the drum itself, is where most marine-specific engineering goes. The heat source is the second difference: many vessels run the dryer off the same steam range used for the calender and the galley, because steam is already available at low pressure and does not add electrical load to a generator that is already carrying hotel and machinery services.

Main components

Drum and drive

The perforated stainless steel drum is belt- or direct-driven and reverses direction on a timed cycle to stop laundry balling up in a single mass, which would otherwise dry unevenly and place an eccentric load on the bearings while the ship is rolling.

Heat source

Steam-heated units draw off the ship's low-pressure range through a finned heating coil and a steam trap; electrically heated units use resistance elements staged in banks so the control system can step heat output up or down without cycling the whole load on and off.

Lint filtration

A primary lint screen sits directly in the airstream at the drum outlet and needs clearing after every load; a secondary screen or lint trap downstream catches what the first one misses before air reaches the fan and duct.

Exhaust ducting and fan

An extraction fan pulls moist air through the duct run to a weather deck outlet fitted with a non-return damper so following seas or wind gusts cannot force water back down the duct into the laundry.

Sizing and heat source selection

Dryer capacity is quoted in kilograms of dry laundry per batch and should be matched to the washing machine capacity feeding it, typically at a similar or slightly larger kilogram rating so the dryer is not run as the bottleneck of the laundry cycle. The choice between steam and electric heat usually comes down to what is already installed: a vessel with a steam range for the galley and calender gains little by adding an electric dryer, while a vessel with no low-pressure steam distribution avoids running a dedicated steam line for one machine.

Regulations and class

Class and SOLAS Chapter II-2 requirements for laundry spaces centre on fire safety rather than on the dryer as a machine: the exhaust duct routing through fire zones needs fire dampers or equivalent protection where it penetrates a boundary, and lint accumulation inside the duct is treated as a recognised fire source during surveys. Electrically heated units fall under the same periodic insulation resistance and earth continuity checks as other fixed electrical machinery.

Typical faults

  • Lint-blocked duct — restricts airflow, extends drying time, and raises the surface temperature of the heating coil until it becomes a fire source.
  • Failed steam trap — lets condensate collect in the heating coil, causing water hammer and uneven heat output.
  • Worn drum bearings — from years of eccentric loading, producing vibration that eventually damages the drive belt or motor mounts.
  • Damaged door seal — lets moist air escape into the laundry space, raising ambient humidity and corrosion risk on nearby steelwork.
