Accommodation Light
Accommodation lighting runs on the ship's normal supply and switches over on blackout, but it is not the same fixture as emergency lighting - mixing the two up in a refit leaves cabins lit that should be dark, and escape routes dark that should be lit.

What sets accommodation lighting apart from navigation and emergency lighting
Accommodation lighting covers the general-purpose fixtures in cabins, mess rooms, offices, and public spaces - the lighting crew live and work under day to day. It runs from the normal supply and is not required to hold a fire rating or a specific colour temperature the way navigation lights do, and it is a separate system from the emergency lighting that must come on automatically from the emergency source when the main supply fails. A fixture can look identical on the outside and still be the wrong one for its location if it lacks the certification a specific space requires.
Main components
Luminaire and diffuser
LED panel or fitting with a diffuser rated for the space - impact-resistant polycarbonate in workshops and machinery-adjacent alleyways, standard diffusers in cabins and offices.
Driver
The LED driver converts the ship's supply to the low-voltage DC the diodes need; driver failure, not LED failure, is the most common reason a modern fixture goes dark.
Mounting and enclosure rating
IP rating and, in machinery spaces or on weather-exposed accommodation exteriors, explosion-proof or increased-safety certification where the space classification requires it.
Selection criteria
- Colour temperature and CRI - warmer temperatures, around 3000K, in cabins for rest, cooler and higher CRI in galleys and medical spaces for task visibility.
- IP rating - IP44 or better for damp spaces like laundries and showers, higher again for weatherdeck accommodation exteriors.
- Driver compatibility with dimming circuits, where fitted, since not every driver dims cleanly on the ship's control system.
- Vibration rating - fixtures near machinery casings or steering gear flats need a higher vibration tolerance than a standard office fitting.
Regulations and class requirements
SOLAS Ch. II-1 sets general requirements for the main and emergency lighting systems, and class rules for electrical installations cover circuit protection, cable routing, and IP rating by space type. Accommodation lighting itself is lightly regulated compared with emergency and escape lighting, but the circuit design - protection, isolation, and how accommodation lighting sheds load on blackout - falls under the same electrical survey as the rest of the ship's low-voltage distribution.
Typical faults
- Driver failure mistaken for LED failure - the whole fixture gets replaced when only the driver needed swapping, at several times the cost.
- Wrong IP rating fitted in a damp space - condensation gets into the driver housing and shortens its life well below the rated hours.
- Dimming flicker after a driver batch change - a supplier substitution changes the driver's dimming curve without anyone updating the control panel settings.
- Standard fixtures installed where explosion-proof was specified - found on refits where the replacement was sourced by fixture size rather than by space classification.
What to look for in a supplier
- Stated rated hours and driver warranty separate from the LED module warranty.
- IP and, where relevant, hazardous-area certification matched to the actual space, not a generic marine rating.
- Consistent colour temperature across a batch order, since mismatched fixtures in the same corridor are an obvious refit tell.
- Spares availability for the driver specifically, which is the part that actually fails.
When replacing accommodation fixtures during a refit, order by space classification first and fixture size second - a like-for-like physical fit that drops the IP or hazardous-area rating is an invisible mistake until the space fails a survey.
