As a Fuel Oil Separator, it is normally installed in the engine-room fuel, lubricating-oil, sludge or bilge-treatment area with feed, clean-liquid and sludge connections. In that role, its primary purpose is to separate water and solid contamination from fuel, lubricating oil, sludge or another liquid stream by centrifugal force. Fuel-oil, lube-oil and sludge separators use similar high-speed bowl principles but differ in process setup, sealing and discharge arrangements for the treated medium.
