The Schottel SRP 5000 is a medium‑speed, offset reduction gearbox delivering up to 5 MW of propulsion power with a typical 4:1 ratio, converting high‑rpm engine output to low‑rpm propeller speed. As a Reduction Gear, it is normally installed between a propulsion engine or motor and the shaft line, reducing or adapting rotational speed and transmitting torque to the propeller. In that role, its primary purpose is to match prime-mover speed and torque to the propulsion shaft while providing the required clutching or reduction arrangement. Single-stage, multi-stage and epicyclic marine gearboxes differ in gear geometry and layout, but all depend on alignment, tooth contact, bearings and clean pressurized lubrication.
