P625-MDO-Purifier

Fuel Oil Separator · Separators & Purifiers

Class-certified type (DNV register) · technical data sheet not yet verified

Alfa Laval P625-MDO-Purifier separator for purifier, marine fuel/lube oil, optimised for marine diesel oil purification. Fuel oil capacity 7474 l/h, lube oil capacity 5979 l/h. Bowl diameter 395 mm, motor power 7.5 kW. P-series purifiers are the predecessor of the S-series — widely installed worldwide.

Inspection

Inspector Detail

Common issues

  • Sludge/soot buildup on the disc stack reducing separation efficiency
  • Bowl not reaching full operating speed due to a worn friction clutch or slipping drive belt
  • Wrong gravity disc fitted for the current fuel/lube density, causing water carryover or oil loss to sludge
  • Excessive vibration from bowl imbalance or uneven sludge deposits
  • Nuisance or missed sludge discharges from an incorrectly set discharge water/back-pressure
  • Leakage at bowl top disc O-rings or seals
  • False sludge-discharge signals from the control system

Inspection checklist

  • Check bowl running hours against the manufacturer's overhaul interval
  • Inspect the disc stack for sludge, scale or corrosion deposits
  • Confirm the fitted gravity disc matches the current fuel/lube oil density
  • Check friction clutch and drive belt condition
  • Inspect bowl body and lock ring for wear, cracking or deformation
  • Check bowl bottom/top O-rings and seals for hardening or leakage
  • Test discharge water solenoid valve and pressure switch
  • Check running vibration against the machine's baseline
  • Verify feed pump flow and preheater temperature are within the separator's operating window

Service intervals

Major bowl overhaul (disc stack, seals, gaskets)typically every 4,000-8,000 running hours or per maker's interval, whichever comes first - confirm against Alfa Laval's schedule for the P625
Drive belt / friction clutch inspectionevery 2,000 running hours
Gravity disc checkon every significant change of fuel or lube oil grade/density
Sludge tank and discharge checkdaily to weekly depending on fuel quality

Typical wear limits

Disc stack conditionno fixed numeric limit for this model - any pitting, erosion or deformation that prevents the discs from stacking correctly against each other is cause for renewal; compare against a new disc set

Ranges are typical for this design class. Always confirm against the manufacturer documentation for your serial number.

Critical spares

  • Complete disc stack set
  • Bowl top and bottom O-ring/gasket kit
  • Gravity disc set (assorted sizes for the density range in use)
  • Drive belt
  • Friction clutch lining/shoes
  • Spindle seal rings

Safety

  • The bowl is a high-speed rotating assembly - reassembly must follow the maker's torque and sequence exactly, or it can fail catastrophically
  • Do not open the bowl until it has fully stopped; rotational inertia after power-off can remain significant for some time
  • Hot oil and steam heating lines around the purifier present a burn hazard
  • Sludge is a MARPOL-regulated discharge - confirm routing before opening any drain valve

Class survey

Fuel oil purifiers are covered under the periodical machinery survey. Surveyor typically wants overhaul/running-hour records, confirmation that the bowl-not-rotating safety interlock functions, and evidence sludge handling follows the vessel's approved oil record book procedures.

Estimated lifetime: bowl overhaul typically falls due every 4,000-8,000 running hours; the complete separator commonly remains in service 20-25 years with proper maintenance - confirm against Alfa Laval's own service schedule for the P625-MDO

Makers and authorised dealers rarely quote marine equipment without the vessel. With these details we can check availability and prices faster; without them we may have to ask first, which can cost a few days. If you cannot share the vessel, a photo of the equipment’s rating plate does the same job — attach it below or send it as a reply to our confirmation e-mail.
