S805-MDO-Purifier

Fuel Oil Separator · Separators & Purifiers

Class-certified type (DNV register) · technical data sheet not yet verified

Alfa Laval S805-MDO-Purifier high-speed disc-stack centrifugal separator for fuel/lube oil treatment, small marine, optimised for marine diesel oil purification. Fuel oil capacity 3104 l/h, lube oil capacity 2484 l/h. Bowl diameter 365 mm, motor power 5.5 kW. Part of the S-series — the current generation marine separators with ALCAP control.

Inspection

Inspector Detail

Common issues

  • Sludge and soot build-up on the disc stack reducing separation efficiency and increasing vibration
  • Worn or hardened seal rings causing loss of hermetic seal and oil-water carryover
  • Gravity disc size mismatch for the fuel/lube viscosity in use, leading to poor water separation or oil loss to sludge
  • Sliding bowl bottom O-ring wear causing premature or incomplete opening/closing of the bowl
  • Bearing wear in the bowl spindle or gearbox leading to abnormal noise and vibration
  • Frequency converter or drive motor faults on variable-speed units
  • Backpressure/discharge valve fouling affecting desludging

Inspection checklist

  • Check bowl body, disc stack, and top disc for cracks, pitting, or corrosion at each major overhaul
  • Verify seal ring and O-ring condition/dimensions against maker's tolerance
  • Confirm correct gravity disc is fitted for current feed conditions
  • Check operating/sealing water supply pressure and quality
  • Inspect sliding bowl bottom for wear marks and correct opening/closing timing
  • Check bowl balance and running vibration at operating speed
  • Verify sludge discharge frequency against fuel contamination level
  • Check gearbox oil level/condition and friction coupling if fitted

Service intervals

Seal rings / O-ring settypically every 4,000-8,000 running hours or at bowl overhaul - confirm against maker's manual
Bowl disc stack cleaningevery 500-2,000 hours depending on fuel quality and desludge interval
Gearbox oil changetypically every 4,000-8,000 hours or per maker's schedule
Major bowl overhaul / bearing replacementtypically every 8,000-16,000 hours - confirm against maker's manual

Typical wear limits

Seal ring wearreplace when visibly hardened, cracked, or below maker's minimum thickness - no universal figure, check maker's manual
Bowl body / disc stack corrosion or pittingany pitting or cracking is cause for rejection regardless of measured depth - inspect per maker's guidance

Ranges are typical for this design class. Always confirm against the manufacturer documentation for your serial number.

Critical spares

  • Seal ring set for bowl
  • O-ring kit for sliding bowl bottom
  • Gravity disc set (assorted sizes for expected feed conditions)
  • Bowl spindle bearings
  • Friction lining / brake pads (if fitted)
  • Sludge discharge valve seals

Safety

  • High rotational energy stored in the bowl - never open before full stop and lock-out
  • Hot fuel/lube oil under pressure during operation and cleaning
  • Sludge and operating water discharge under pressure
  • Risk of bowl imbalance/vibration if disc stack is incorrectly reassembled after cleaning

Class survey

Fuel oil purifiers are typically covered under the vessel's general machinery survey rather than a dedicated class item; surveyors check that overhaul records match the maker's recommended interval and that safety interlocks (bowl-closed detection, guard) are functional.

Estimated lifetime: Bowl and rotating parts commonly remain in service 15-20 years with scheduled overhauls; seals and O-rings are consumables replaced far more frequently. Actual life depends heavily on fuel/lube quality and desludge discipline.

Makers and authorised dealers rarely quote marine equipment without the vessel. With these details we can check availability and prices faster; without them we may have to ask first, which can cost a few days. If you cannot share the vessel, a photo of the equipment’s rating plate does the same job — attach it below or send it as a reply to our confirmation e-mail.
