Turnbuckle TB-3SLR

Turnbuckle TB-3SLR by GERMAN LASHING Robert Böck GmbH. DNV TA certificate TAS000039N.

Inspector Detail

Common issues

  • Thread corrosion or seizure from saltwater exposure, making tensioning difficult
  • Thread wear reducing working load capacity over time
  • Bent or deformed body from overload or dropped-object damage
  • Missing or worn locking pin allowing the turnbuckle to loosen in service
  • Coating breakdown accelerating corrosion at threads and body

Inspection checklist

  • Visual check for cracks, bending, or deformation of the turnbuckle body
  • Thread condition check - full engagement, no excessive wear or corrosion pitting
  • Confirm the locking device/pin is present and functional
  • Check for a legible working load limit (WLL) and identification marking
  • Function check - smooth tensioning/release without excessive force
  • Check for compatible, matching lashing rod/hook fittings at each end

Service intervals

Visual inspection before use each lashing operation
Detailed inspection of thread, body, and marking per the vessel's Cargo Securing Manual (CSS Code)
Thread lubrication periodically per manufacturer recommendation to prevent seizure

Critical spares

  • Replacement turnbuckles of matching WLL and thread type
  • Locking pins/securing clips
  • Compatible lashing rods for the same lashing set
  • Compatible twistlocks/hooks for the same lashing set

Safety

  • An overloaded or corroded turnbuckle can fail suddenly under tension, creating a snap-back hazard
  • Never exceed the marked working load limit
  • Damaged or unmarked (no WLL) lashing gear must be withdrawn from service, not reused

Class survey

Cargo lashing equipment condition is checked against the vessel's approved Cargo Securing Manual. Damaged, corroded, or unmarked lashing gear should be removed from service and not used for class-relevant cargo securing arrangements.
