Common issues
- Thread corrosion or galling making the turnbuckle difficult or impossible to adjust
- Bent or deformed body from overload or impact during cargo operations
- Worn or elongated threads reducing effective working load
- Cracked welds or castings that are often missed until close visual inspection
- Missing or illegible working load limit (WLL) marking
- Seized locking mechanism (if fitted) from corrosion or paint overspray
Inspection checklist
- Visual inspection for cracks, bending, corrosion, and thread condition before each use
- Check the WLL marking is present and legible
- Confirm free running of the thread through its full adjustment range
- Check correct pairing with matching lashing rods/turnbuckles of the same rated capacity
- Inspect the locking mechanism (if fitted) for function
- Cross-check against the vessel's Cargo Securing Manual for correct type and location
- Periodic formal inspection per the vessel's lashing gear register/inspection schedule
- Condemn and replace any item that fails visual criteria rather than repairing by welding or bending back

Critical spares

- Thread lubricant suitable for marine deck exposure
Safety
- An overloaded or damaged turnbuckle can fail suddenly under tension, releasing stored energy - stand clear of the load path when tensioning or releasing
- Never substitute a lower-rated turnbuckle or mix components from different systems/ratings in one lashing run
- A failed lashing point can allow container stack movement or collapse, a serious hazard to personnel on deck
- Never repair a damaged turnbuckle by heating, welding, or bending back into shape - condemn and replace it
Class survey
Class/port state checks that lashing equipment condition matches the Cargo Securing Manual and that damaged or worn gear is removed from service rather than repaired; missing WLL markings or mismatched components are common findings.
