Common issues

• Hull GRP deterioration (gel-coat cracking, delamination) from UV and weather exposure
• Corrosion of the on-load release hook mechanism affecting free operation
• Engine starting failure due to battery condition or fuel system issues after long standby periods
• Skate/ramp or launching structure corrosion affecting the freefall release
• Seat belt and internal fitting deterioration
• Painter line and towing bridle wear or incorrect rigging
• Hydrostatic interlock or release mechanism seizure from lack of exercising

Inspection checklist

• Visual inspection of the hull for cracks, delamination and structural damage
• Function test the on-load release gear per the maker's procedure and SOLAS/MSC.1/Circ.1206
• Start and run the engine; check cooling water, exhaust and fuel supply
• Check battery condition and charging system
• Inspect release hook, hydrostatic interlock and safety pin/lock arrangement
• Check painter, towing bridle and rigging for wear or damage
• Inspect seat belts, canopy hatches and internal emergency equipment inventory
• Check davit/cradle chocks and retaining arrangements

Safety

• On-load release gear failure is a well-documented cause of serious injury or death during drills - strict adherence to SOLAS drill procedures and maker instructions is required
• Freefall launch produces high deceleration forces on occupants
• Engine exhaust in an enclosed lifeboat
• Battery gas and acid hazards
• Never conduct drills without the required precautions and trained personnel

Class survey

Freefall lifeboats and their release gear are subject to SOLAS/MSC.1/Circ.1206 requirements, including annual thorough examination and 5-yearly overhaul of the on-load release gear by an authorized service provider, with certification retained onboard and reviewed at class/flag survey.
