G für Green/Ultra-Long-Stroke, 60 für Bohrung 600 mm, ME-C für vollständig elektronische Steuerung. Ultra-Long-Stroke-Variante des meistgebauten S60-Motors.

Background

The G60ME-C is the Ultra-Long-Stroke variant of the 600 mm engine series for bulk carriers and tankers. At same bore as S60ME-C, G60 operates at lower speed and enables larger propeller. Designed for EEDI Phase 3 optimised newbuildings in Panamax class. G variant is increasingly preferred over S variant, as efficiency is prioritised over power density.

Inspector checklist

Laufzeug & Tribologie
  • Zylinderlaufbuchse: 600 mm Bohrung, Ultra-Long-Stroke — höhere Seitenkräfte als S60, Verschleißprofil an 8 Punkten
  • Piston rings: Increased tilting moments due to long stroke — CPR ring condition to be documented precisely
  • Crosshead bearing: Ultra-Long-Stroke side forces — bearing clearance and oil film formation
ME-C Steuerung
  • FIVA-Ventile: Standard-ME-C-Prüfung
  • HPS: pump output and accumulators
  • PMI-Online: Cylinder pressure curves at lower speed than S60
Brennstoffaufbereitung
  • Fuel injectors: Longer injection time per cycle — spray pattern and erosion
  • Kraftstoff-Separatoren: Cat-Fine-Entfernung
  • Brennstoff-Qualitätsmanagement
Dichtungssysteme
  • Stopfbuchse: Ultra-Long-Stroke = längerer Hub als S60 — höhere Dichtungs-Beanspruchung, Drainage-Trend dokumentieren
  • Auslassventil: ME-C = elektronisch, Standardprüfung
  • Zylinderkopf: Blow-by
Turbolader & Spülluft
  • Turbocharger: 1-2× — efficiency and bearing clearance
  • Scavenge air cooler: pressure differential and cooling capacity
  • Auxiliary Blower: Wider operating range at Ultra-Low-RPM

Logbook reference values

Parameter Expected Deviation means
Exhaust gas temperature per cylinder 345-420 °C at 85% MCR Spread >20 °C → Verbrennungs-Asymmetrie
Scavenge Air Pressure 2.5-3.5 bar abs at MCR Zu niedrig → Turbolader prüfen
Zylinderöl-Feed-Rate 0.6-0.9 g/kWh BN-Matching
ME Hydraulikdruck 200-300 bar Druckabfall → HPS/FIVA
Kühlwasser-Temperatur 80-90 °C Einzelzylinder-Abweichung → Dichtung/Laufbuchse

Common Failure Modes

Kreuzkopf-Belastung
Symptoms: Lagerspiel-Zunahme, Vibrationsanstieg
Causes: Ultra-Long-Stroke Querkräfte, Ölkontamination, Unzureichende Schmierung
Preventive: Systemöl-Qualität überwachen, Kreuzkopf-Spiel engmaschig kontrollieren
Liner-Kaltkorrosion
Symptoms: Cloverleafing, BN-Verbrauch steigt
Causes: Low cylinder liner temperature at part load, BN-Mismatch
Preventive: Cooling water 80-90 °C, BN40 with VLSFO
Barred Speed Range Vibrationen
Symptoms: Crankshaft vibrations at critical speeds
Causes: Ultra-Low-RPM Betrieb, Falsche BSR-Konfiguration
Preventive: BSR korrekt konfigurieren, schneller Durchlauf

Expert tips

  • 💡 G60 as successor to S60 in newbuilds: The efficiency gains through the larger propeller amount to 3–5% — that is the EEDI lever
  • 💡 With the G60: The engine is physically longer than the S60 — engine room planning and foundation height must be adapted
  • 💡 Slow-Steaming beim G60 ist weniger problematisch als beim S60, da der Motor bereits für niedrigere Drehzahlen optimiert ist
