Alfa Laval S.p.A.

CB20

The Alfa Laval S.p.A. CB20 is a brazed plate heat exchanger from the Alfa Laval CB product line. Thin corrugated plates form alternating flow channels, while brazing seals the media inside the plate pack and strengthens the contact points between plates. The compact gasket-free construction is used for liquid-to-liquid heat transfer as well as selected refrigeration, heating and cooling duties. On board ships, a CB unit may be found in auxiliary cooling systems, oil coolers, HVAC equipment, heat pumps or other packaged machinery where space is limited. The CB20 designation identifies a particular size within the wider CB range, and the final plate pattern, number of plates and connections are selected for the required duty. The exchanger is selected as part of the complete system, so allowable media, pressures, temperatures and cleaning methods must be confirmed for the installed version.

Common failures & inspection points

Fouling of the narrow flow channels caused by scale, sludge, oil degradation products or dirty fluid, indicated by reduced heat transfer and increased pressure drop
Partial blockage caused by debris or failed upstream filtration, indicated by reduced flow and abnormal temperature difference
External leakage at brazed joints or connections caused by corrosion, fatigue or piping loads, indicated by visible leakage or fluid loss
Internal plate failure or cross-leakage caused by corrosion, erosion or fatigue, indicated by contamination between circuits
Freeze damage in susceptible cooling duties caused by inadequate flow or control failure, indicated by distortion, leakage or sudden loss of pressure integrity

Service & Maintenance

Trend temperatures, pressures and pressure drop across both circuits and investigate gradual performance deterioration. Maintain strainers and fluid treatment to prevent deposits from entering the narrow channels. Inspect the plate pack and connections externally for corrosion, leakage and vibration damage and verify that piping is independently supported. Chemical cleaning should follow Alfa Laval guidance and be compatible with the plate and brazing materials. Where freezing is possible, verify flow and control protection. Replace the exchanger if pressure integrity cannot be restored by approved external repairs.

Replacement Parts

A complete spare exchanger is often the most useful critical spare because the brazed plate pack is not normally opened or regasketed. Carry connection seals where fitted, strainer elements, sensors and control-valve service parts associated with the circuit. The decision to stock a complete unit should be based on duty criticality, redundancy and replacement availability.
