MAB-209-MDO-Purifier

The Alfa Laval S.p.A. MAB-209-MDO-Purifier is a solids-retaining disc-stack separator configured for purification of marine diesel oil or comparable distillate fuel. It is generally installed in the engine-room fuel-cleaning system upstream of service tanks, booster equipment or engine fuel-system components. The rotating disc-stack bowl separates denser water and suspended solids from the lighter fuel phase. The duty is typically less viscosity-sensitive than heavy-fuel-oil separation, but stable feed conditions and the correct separator setup remain essential. The MAB family is designed for manual removal of accumulated sludge and can be arranged for clarification or purification. The MAB-209-MDO-Purifier should be treated as a specific MDO purifier configuration rather than as automatically interchangeable with HFO or lubricating-oil versions of the same basic separator size. Exact process conditions, capacity and configuration details must be taken from the manufacturer documentation for the installed serial number.

Common failures & inspection points

Incorrect purifier setup for the actual fuel condition, producing ineffective water separation or fuel loss to the water side
Unexpected water ingress or heavily contaminated bunkers, producing persistent downstream contamination or rapid sludge loading
Deposits in the bowl, disc stack or outlet passages, producing reduced separation performance or unstable flow
Worn bearings, spindle or drive parts, producing abnormal vibration, noise or failure to maintain stable running
Damaged seals or malfunctioning operating-water/discharge components where fitted, producing leakage, failed sealing or abnormal discharge cycles

Service & Maintenance

Inspect the bowl, disc stack and sludge space for water-related corrosion, particulate deposits and mechanical damage. Confirm the purifier arrangement after maintenance and verify correct routing of clean-oil and water outlets. Check drive condition, bearings, spindle, seals and any operating-water or discharge system fitted to the exact model. Review downstream fuel quality and separator operating behaviour after reassembly. Use the manufacturer documentation for exact process settings, wear limits, tightening values and maintenance intervals.

Replacement Parts

Carry the correct routine service kit with seals, O-rings and model-specific renewable items. Depending on redundancy and voyage profile, consider selected bearings, drive parts, valve components and bowl-service items specified by the manufacturer. Verify compatibility with the separator serial number before using spares from another apparently similar unit.
