Common issues
- Bowl vibration from incomplete sludge discharge or a fouled disc stack
- Sliding bowl bottom / operating slide wear causing seal water leakage or incomplete discharge
- Friction/clutch drive wear (where a friction gear drive is fitted) reducing run-up performance
- Seal ring and O-ring degradation from repeated heat cycling
- Bowl spindle or gear unit bearing wear causing noise or vibration
- Reduced separation efficiency from a fouled or worn disc stack
- Sludge or water discharge port blockage
Inspection checklist
- Check bowl vibration level while running
- Inspect sliding bowl bottom seal rings and O-rings at every bowl opening
- Check the disc stack for fouling, distortion or corrosion
- Verify the sludge/water discharge sequence completes fully each cycle
- Check gear unit or friction coupling oil level and condition
- Inspect bowl spindle bearings for play or abnormal noise
- Verify operating water and seal water supply pressure and flow
- Check bowl-locked and cover interlocks operate correctly before starting

Safety
- The high-speed rotating bowl stores significant energy - never open the casing until the bowl has fully stopped and is confirmed locked
- Hot oil/fuel under pressure at inlet and outlet connections
- Correct bowl balance is safety-critical; an incorrectly assembled bowl can fail catastrophically at operating speed
- Follow the maker's specified torque sequence exactly when closing the bowl - incorrect tightening is a recognised cause of bowl-top failure
Class survey
Fuel oil and lube oil separators are typically covered under Continuous Survey Machinery. Class looks for evidence of overhaul per the maker's PMS, correct bowl assembly/torque records, and confirmation that casing containment and safety interlocks are intact, given the stored rotational energy in the bowl during operation.
