Stern Slewing Ramp
MacGregor Stern Slewing Ramp — Multipurpose RoRo cargo ships requiring flexibility to berth stern-to at a dedicated RoRo pier or at an angle off the centreline (up to ~35–40° to either side). Documented on 12,800-dwt 'Multiflex' multipurpose vessels (Hamlet Shipping, 1977) and 14,300-dwt RoRo vessels with full slewing capacity either side of centreline..

Common failures & inspection points
Visual and dimensional inspection of hinge pins, bearings, and thrust bearings, including NDT (non-destructive testing) of hinge pins per IACS UR Z24 requirements; clearances to be measured and compared with allowable wear limits.
Inspection of wire ropes (where fitted): check for broken wires, wear, corrosion, kinking, and bird-caging; renewal based on actual condition or manufacturer's recommended service life.
Hydraulic system check: inspect cylinders for rod condition, seal tightness, and corrosion; check hydraulic hoses for interference, sharp bends, blisters, and rents; verify non-return valves and pressure-relief settings.
Watertight/weathertight rubber seals (gaskets) around the ramp door opening: visual inspection for wear, hardening, ageing, distortion, and permanent deformation; permanent impression to be measured and compared against classification limits.
Locking and securing devices (hydraulically-operated cleats, locking bolts, dogging arrangements): function test under load, check for deformation, wear, and correct engagement; lubricate per maker's schedule.
Shore flaps and bridge plates: inspect for structural cracks, corrosion, hinge wear, and surface coating condition; verify anti-slip surface (welded bars or checker plate) integrity.
Electrical and control systems: test limit switches, position indicators (including Ramp Position Indicator system where fitted), PLC control sequences, emergency stop functions, and load monitoring system (where installed).
Structural steel inspection: visual and (periodically) close-up survey of ramp plating, stiffeners, deck attachments, and threshold coaming for corrosion, cracks, and weld defects; coating condition assessment.
