Common issues
- Lens/optical window contamination from oil film or soot reducing IR sensitivity

Inspection checklist
- Visually inspect the optical window for oil film, soot or paint overspray
- Functional test using the manufacturer's approved test source (e.g. test lamp) rather than an open flame
- Confirm field of view is not obstructed by newly installed equipment or lagging
- Check loop wiring insulation resistance
- Verify the Ex ia certification label and cable entry are intact and undamaged
- Confirm detector zone/address in the fire panel matches the as-fitted location on the fire plan
- Check mounting bracket for corrosion or looseness
- Confirm alarm relay/output at the fire panel activates on test

Safety
- A fouled or obstructed window can mean the system fails to detect a real fire without any alarm being raised - treat a fault or overdue clean as urgent
- Do not substitute cable, glands or fittings in the hazardous area with anything not part of the Ex ia certified installation
- If a detector is isolated for maintenance, log it and restore it immediately afterward - a forgotten isolation removes protection with no indication
- Never test with an open flame
Class survey
Fixed fire detection is tested annually under SOLAS II-2/14 and flag/class requirements. Surveyor will check functional test records, that the fire plan matches as-fitted detector locations, and that no detector remains isolated without a documented reason.
