Common failures & inspection points

Corrosion and Erosion of Boiler Tubes

Visual inspection of internal boiler surfaces, tube walls, and seams for pitting, cracks, and material loss. Measure wall thickness on tube nozzles, welded connections and tube sheets using ultrasonic testing. Special attention to areas exposed to high-velocity exhaust gas flow (MES/MEW) or oxygen-rich zones.

Pressure Vessel Structural Integrity

Examine all welds, riveted connections, tube-to-sheet connections, and pressure-bearing seams for cracks, deformation, and fatigue failures. Check steam drum condition (if applicable) for scale buildup and internal corrosion. Verify fastener condition and tightness on boiler flanges and inspection covers.

Burner System and Combustion Chamber Condition

Inspect oil burner nozzles for carbon buildup and blockage. Check fuel atomization spray pattern. Examine combustion chamber refractory lining for cracks, spalling, and hotspots. Verify burner firing head is properly sealed and gaskets are intact (for MVS, MSH, MCS models with oil firing).

Safety Valve and Pressure Control System

Test safety valves for proper opening pressure and sealing integrity. Inspect pressure gauges for calibration and accuracy. Check control system wiring, electrode contacts (for MEH electrical models), and thermostats for proper function. Verify all interlocks and alarm systems are operational.

Scale and Sediment Accumulation in Water Spaces

Internal visual inspection of boiler shell and tubes for water-side scale deposits, sludge, and sediment. Check water bottom drain systems for blockage. For feed water heaters and economizers (if fitted), inspect for fouling. Verify feedwater treatment system is operating correctly to prevent scaling.
