Common issues

• impeller wear or clogging from solids
• mechanical seal failure allowing water ingress into the motor
• cable gland/sealing failure
• corrosion of wear parts if used outside the pump's design pH range
• bearing wear from running dry or from abrasive solids
• motor overheating from prolonged dry running

Inspection checklist

• check seal housing oil for water contamination (moisture indicator if fitted)
• inspect power cable and gland for damage
• check impeller and wear plate for wear or clogging
• test motor winding insulation resistance
• verify float switch/level control operation if fitted
• confirm correct rotation direction
• inspect lifting handle/chain for corrosion or wear

Safety

• electrical hazard from a damaged cable or seal in a wet environment
• exposure to corrosive or hazardous sludge - use appropriate PPE

Class survey

Portable submersible pumps used for tank cleaning or sludge removal are generally checked for correct earthing/electrical isolation before use and are not typically within main class machinery survey scope unless fitted as approved fixed equipment - confirm status against the vessel's approved drawings.
