Common issues
- Impeller or diffuser wear from abrasive solids in drainage/bilge water, reducing head and flow
- Cable gland or plug seepage allowing water ingress into the motor housing
- Mechanical seal wear letting water into the oil-filled seal chamber - usually first detected by a discoloured or emulsified oil sample
- Strainer/inlet screen clogging with debris, causing loss of suction or dry running
- Float switch or level control fouling or sticking, causing the pump to run dry or fail to start
- Cable damage from repeated deployment and handling on deck or in tanks
- Bearing wear from prolonged running or from solids ingress past a failed seal
Inspection checklist
- Check the seal chamber oil for water contamination (milky appearance) at the recommended interval
- Inspect power and control cables for cuts, abrasion, or damaged strain relief
- Test insulation resistance of the motor windings before returning the pump to service
- Check inlet strainer/screen for blockage or damage
- Verify float switch or level sensor operates correctly and the pump starts/stops at the intended levels
- Inspect impeller and wear plate for erosion or damage from solids
- Check lifting handle, chain, or bracket for corrosion and secure attachment
- Confirm the pump runs without excessive vibration or noise on a test start
Service intervals

Safety
- Electrical hazard - always insulation-test and confirm earth continuity before handling a submersible pump that has been in service
- Never open the motor housing on a pump that is still connected to power
- Solids passage rating (per the spare-parts note) must not be exceeded - blocked or overloaded pumps can overheat the motor
Class survey
Portable submersible drainage pumps are typically checked as part of the vessel's damage control / emergency equipment inventory rather than under machinery continuous survey. Surveyors commonly expect evidence of periodic function testing and that the pump, cable, and lifting gear are in serviceable condition for emergency deployment.
