Common issues
- Gear/bushing wear increasing internal slip and reducing volumetric efficiency, seen as falling flow at rated pressure

Safety
- The relief valve must be correctly set and tested - overpressure can rupture piping or the pump casing
- Do not run dry - this can destroy bushings/seals rapidly and, on oil duty, create a fire risk from a failed seal spraying oil onto hot surfaces
- Isolate and depressurize before opening the pump casing
- Rotating shaft/coupling guarding must be in place

Pumps in fuel oil or lube oil transfer/polishing service typically fall under general machinery survey rather than a dedicated pump notation; class will want to see the relief valve correctly set and evidence of routine seal/leakage inspection, particularly on fuel or lube oil duty.

Common failures & inspection points
All pumps must undergo factory pressure testing at manufacture (typically 1.5x operating pressure). Documentation of these tests is required.
Inspection for scratches, pitting, or play in the internal tooth flanks and bearing surfaces. Tooth flank play should be within specification limits. This is critical for long service life and leak control.
Visual inspection of shaft seal (Packing Seal or Mechanical Seal depending on model). Inspection for oil/fluid leakage traces or damage. Particularly critical for sealless mag-drive models (8123A/8124A).
Test pump under typical operating conditions (rated pressure, rated speed). Abnormal vibrations or noises indicate internal damage or unbalanced impellers.
For marine applications: stainless steel models (127A/227A/327A/4227C) inspect for surface corrosion or stress corrosion cracking. Cast iron models require protective coating inspection.
