Simrad AI80 Class A is a Automatic Identification System transponder. It is normally installed on the bridge with interfaces to GNSS, heading, speed and other navigation sensors and with dedicated VHF antennas. Its primary purpose is to transmit and receive vessel identity, position, course, speed and voyage-related data for traffic awareness and regulatory reporting. Compared with ordinary VHF radio, AIS exchanges structured digital navigation data automatically and depends on several external sensor and data interfaces.
