Polyester & Vinyl Ester Resins

Unsaturated polyester and vinyl ester resins cure cold, without welding heat, but they are not interchangeable: vinyl ester costs more and tolerates wet, chemically exposed pipe repairs that a polyester system will eventually blister and fail under.

What sets these resins apart from each other

Both resin families cure through the same basic chemistry: a liquid resin, an accelerator already mixed in, and a catalyst added just before use trigger an exothermic reaction that cross-links the resin into a hard solid, usually reinforced with fibreglass cloth or roving. The difference that matters on board is chemical resistance. Vinyl ester resin has fewer ester linkages exposed to attack, so it resists water absorption, seawater and mild acids and alkalis far better than standard unsaturated polyester, which makes it the default choice for pipe repairs, tank linings and anything that stays wet in service. Polyester remains cheaper and cures perfectly well for dry, low-stress secondary repairs where long-term water exposure is not a factor.

Main components of the system

Base resin

Supplied pre-accelerated so it will not cure until catalyst is added, and formulated with a viscosity suited to hand lay-up or, in a thinner grade, to saturating woven repair tape.

Catalyst

Methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (MEKP) is the standard catalyst for both resin types, added at a small percentage by weight; more catalyst shortens working time and raises cure exotherm, less extends both.

Reinforcement

Woven fibreglass tape or cloth, sometimes combined with a metallic filler for load-bearing repairs, provides the mechanical strength the resin alone cannot; the resin's job is to wet out the fibres and bond them into a solid laminate.

Filler and pigment

Thixotropic fillers thicken the resin for vertical or overhead application so it does not run before curing, while pigment is mainly cosmetic and has no effect on strength.

Selection and working practice

Choice between the two resin types should follow the exposure the repair will see, not the price difference alone.

Ambient temperature affects both resins directly: cure slows sharply below about 15°C and catalyst ratios usually need adjusting per the manufacturer's chart, while working time drops fast above roughly 25°C, so mixing small batches in warm engine rooms avoids wasting resin that gels in the pot before it is applied.

Typical faults

  • Under-catalysed mix — cures soft or stays tacky, giving a repair that looks complete but has little structural strength.
  • Trapped air in the laminate — from poor rolling-out of the fibre layers, leaving voids that become failure points under pressure or vibration.
  • Polyester used on a wet-service repair — absorbs moisture over months, blisters, and eventually delaminates from the substrate.
  • Exceeded pot life — resin mixed in too large a batch gels before it can be worked into the reinforcement, wasting the mix and leaving an incomplete lay-up.

What to look for in a supplier

  • Clear separation of polyester and vinyl ester product lines with distinct datasheets, not one generic "resin" listing.
  • Stated pot life and cure schedule across a realistic engine room temperature range.
  • Shelf life and storage temperature limits, since both resin types degrade in long-term storage even unopened.
  • Compatible catalyst and filler sold as a matched kit, reducing the chance of a mismatched ratio on board.

Never substitute polyester for vinyl ester on a wet pipe repair to save cost — the failure shows up as a weeping joint months later, usually at the worst possible time.
