A provision or stores crane lifts food, spares and general stores aboard, usually smaller and lighter-duty than a cargo crane on the same ship, sized for occasional pallet and drum lifts rather than continuous cargo cycles.

What makes this type distinct
A provision or stores crane is built for a lighter, less frequent duty cycle than a main cargo crane: it exists to bring food, spare parts, lube oil drums and general stores aboard at anchor or alongside, not to discharge the ship's cargo. On a container ship or tanker where no cargo crane is fitted at all, the provision crane may be the only lifting appliance aboard, and it is sized and located specifically for stores handling near the accommodation or a dedicated stores hatch rather than over the main cargo holds. Where a ship does carry cargo cranes, the provision crane is usually a smaller separate unit so cargo operations and stores handling do not compete for the same equipment.
Main components
Crane structure and pedestal or davit base
Lighter-built than a cargo crane, since the rated load and duty cycle are both lower, but still requiring a reinforced deck foundation matched to the crane's overturning moment.
Boom or jib
Fixed or luffing jib giving reach over the ship's side or to a stores hatch; telescoping is less common than on cargo or offshore cranes given the more limited reach needed.
Winch and hook
Single hoist winch in most cases, since stores cranes rarely need the dual-hook or heave-compensated arrangements found on cargo or offshore support cranes.
Control station
Local pendant or a simple cab, often positioned for a clear view down onto the stores boat or the quay stores point rather than across the whole deck.
Selection and sizing
Rated capacity is set by the heaviest single item routinely lifted, typically a loaded pallet, a drum or a small container of spares, plus margin, rather than by cargo tonnage. Reach needs to cover the distance from the ship's side or a stores boat alongside to the stores hatch or deck stowage point. On ships without a dedicated cargo crane, the provision crane's capacity sometimes gets tested informally for occasional heavier lifts it was never rated for, which is the single most common way this type of crane gets overloaded.
Regulations and class
Class societies certify provision cranes under the same lifting appliance rules applied to cargo cranes, scaled to the lower rated capacity: proof load test before entry into service, periodic thorough examination, and a load chart kept aboard. There is no separate lighter regulatory regime just because the crane is smaller; a stores crane rated at two tonnes is surveyed with the same rigour, proportionate to its capacity, as a forty-tonne cargo crane.

Because a stores crane sits idle for long stretches, treat every lift as the first test of the day: check the hook, wire rope and brake before loading, not after noticing something looked wrong mid-lift.
