What sets this type apart
Unlike navigation lights, which simply stay on to show the ship's presence and heading, a daylight signalling lamp is an active communication tool aimed and triggered by hand to spell out Morse code to another vessel, a lifeboat or a shore station. Its defining feature against ordinary signal lamps or aldis-type torches used ashore is that it must remain usable when everything else on the bridge has failed: SOLAS requires it to work independently of the ship's main and emergency power supply, which in practice means it runs on its own battery pack or a hand-cranked/dry-cell arrangement rather than being wired into the ship's electrical system.
Main components
- Lamp head - a focused beam source, historically incandescent, now commonly LED for longer battery life and instant-on response with no filament warm-up delay.
- Shutter or trigger mechanism - a spring-loaded lever or button under the operator's finger that breaks the beam into the dots and dashes of Morse code as it is squeezed.
- Focusing lens or reflector - concentrates the beam so it stays legible at the required daylight range rather than scattering into a diffuse glow.
- Independent power source - a sealed battery pack, or on older units dry cells, sized to give a useful signalling endurance without needing the ship's supply.
- Handle and sighting arrangement - allows the operator to aim and hold the lamp steady on a moving bridge wing, sometimes with a simple sight bead or notch.
Selection and sizing
The relevant figure is daylight signalling range rather than raw lumen output, since the beam has to remain legible against a bright sky background, not just in darkness. Battery endurance under continuous shutter operation is the second practical criterion - a lamp that fades after ten minutes of signalling is of limited use in an extended exchange. LED units have largely replaced incandescent lamps because they hold beam intensity for longer on the same battery charge and tolerate the vibration and rough handling typical of bridge wing storage.
Regulations and class
SOLAS chapter V requires ships to carry a daylight signalling lamp that does not depend on the ship's main or emergency source of electrical power, alongside the ability to signal by Morse light more generally. It is carried as part of the navigational equipment fit rather than under the GMDSS radio equipment rules, and its presence is checked at flag and port state inspections as part of the navigational equipment scale for the ship's size and trade.
Typical faults
- Battery left uncharged or depleted in storage - the lamp is found dead exactly when it is needed, since it is used rarely between drills.
- Shutter mechanism stiff or sticking from lack of use - produces ragged, hard-to-read Morse spacing under pressure.
- Lens cracked or fogged from bridge wing weather exposure - cuts effective range without the fault being obvious in daylight testing indoors.
- Wrong or mismatched battery type substituted at sea - reduced endurance or an incompatible charging arrangement.
What to look for in a supplier
- Confirmed independence from ship's power in the product specification, not just a portable form factor.
- Stated daylight signalling range under stated conditions, not only a general lumen figure.
- Battery type and expected shelf/charge endurance suited to infrequent use between drills.
- Robust housing rated for bridge wing exposure to salt spray and temperature extremes.
Test the lamp's shutter action and battery charge at every fire and boat drill, not just visually check it is present - a lamp that looks fine in the rack is not the same as one that will hold a clean Morse rhythm.
